Peanuts Lose Big
August 6, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
South Georgia Peanuts News Release
The South Georgia Peanuts, presented by Security Bank, suffered a lopsided loss on Monday night at the hands of the Anderson Joes. Anderson won for the first time in Albany by defeating South Georgia 14-3.
The Peanuts started the game out well by taking a 1-0 lead after one inning of play. In the bottom of the first, Curtis Goodwin Sr. led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a ground-out and then scored on a sacrifice from Nick Prosise. That would be all the scoring the Peanuts could muster for quite some time in the game.
The Joes began to explode at the plate in the top of the third by scoring four runs. The attack continued in the fourth with three runs and then finished in the fifth with six runs. Peanuts pitching struggled mightily during those innings as starter Jerome Gamble and Josh Cowles combined to give up 13 runs (7 earned) on 12 walks with five walks. The defense did not help much either as the Peanuts committed three errors during that span.
The Peanuts did score a run in both the seventh and eighth innings but left the bases loaded each frame. The Joes scored their final run in the top of the ninth off of Mike Colacchio.
With the game virtually decided, Derek Duclos, Jake Upwood and Chris Webb each pitched a scoreless inning. Steve Butler was the only peanut with more than one hit going 3-4 with a run scored. Jay Garthwaite made his Peanuts debut going 1-5 with a run scored.
The Peanuts look to even the series on Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 7:10 with Shannon Wirth getting the start. Tickets are still available by visiting the Peanuts box office at Paul Eames Park or by logging onto southgeorigapeanuts.com.
