Peanuts are first half champs

South Georgia Peanuts News Release


The South Georgia Peanuts, presented by Security Bank, won the first half SCL championship on Friday by winning the first game of a double-header against Bradenton 11-7. After clinching a spot in the SCL championship, to be played at the end of the season, the Peanuts lost game two of the double-header 2-1.

The Peanuts clinched the first half title with an overall record of 33-9 after the first game finished. South Georgia and Bradenton were tied 3-3 going into the eighth inning. The Peanuts went on to score eight runs in the frame to take an 11-3 lead. The Juice did not go quietly as they scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning but the Peanuts still won 11-7. Nick Prosise led the way going 3-5 with one run and three RBI. Brandon Woolard went 2-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. One of Woolard's hits was a home run to right field. Jake Upwood got his second win in two days pitching two innings of relief.

The second game was called after five innings due to rain. The Peanuts featured a line-up that included pitchers Josh Cowles in left field and Austin Weilep at second base. Rain began to fall at a tremendous pace after the top of the fifth. With the goal to get through five innings, the teams played on in the bottom of the fifth. The Peanuts had the potential game-winning run on base but could not get more than one run across. Pat Ford, who the Peanuts recently traded to the Juice, pitched five effective innings for Bradenton getting his first win of the season.

The two teams wrap up the five-game series on Saturday at Paul Eames Park. Dustin Taylor will get the start for the Peanuts. First pitch is set for 7:10. Tickets are still available, however it is "pay what you want" Saturday meaning fans can enter the gates for any price they want to pay.
