PCL Names Players of the Week

Published on July 11, 2011 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Paul McAnulty of the Salt Lake Bees and Adalberto Mendez of the New Orleans Zephyrs have been named Pacific Coast League Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 4-10, the league office announced today.

McAnulty batted .500 with two home runs, 13 runs batted in and six runs scored over seven games. Salt Lake's primary designated hitter either led or was tied for the lead in the PCL in six offensive categories during the week: hits (13), extra-base hits (10), total bases (30), doubles (8), batting average (T-1st) and RBI (T-1st). The California native had two or more hits in six of his seven games, including two doubles each in four of the six.

The Long Beach State product has hit a team-best 29 doubles this year, his most in a season since 2006 when he hit 35 between the Portland Beavers and San Diego Padres. McAnulty, who was originally selected by San Diego in the 12th round of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft, enters the All-Star break tied for second on Salt Lake with a .494 slugging percentage and is third with a .859 OPS.

Mendez turned in two starts during the week in which he allowed a combined three hits and recorded a PCL-best .088 batting average against over 11 innings. The right-hander shut out the Iowa Cubs in his second start of the week on July 10th, striking out a season-high seven and surrendering one hit over six innings. The scoreless outing followed his first start where he allowed one run on two hits over five innings pitched on July 5th against the Omaha Storm Chasers. Mendez did not record a decision in either start despite posting a 0.82 earned run average over the week.

The two starts for Mendez were a return to the starting rotation after making eight consecutive appearances for the Zephyrs out of the bullpen. The 29-year-old has pitched in 19 games this season with New Orleans, including 10 starts. For his career, the Dominican Republic native has made 30 starts in 369 appearances.

Mendez is the second New Orleans hurler to win the Pitcher of the Week award over the last three weeks while McAnulty becomes the first Bees hitter to be named Player of the Week this season. McAnulty is the third Bees player in 2011, though, to earn a weekly award after Eric Junge (May 16-22) and Matt Palmer (May 23-29) were awarded the Pitcher of the Week honor.
