The Buffalo Stampede won their opening night game last season, and hoped to make it two opening night victories in a row with a road game against the Quebec Kebs. But despite a strong double-double effort of 21 points and 11 rebounds from Derick Payne, the Stampede were corralled 100-85 by the Kebs. Kevin Ross (12 pts) and Andy Robinson (11 pts) were the other double-figure scoring Stampeders; Robinson and Greg Gamble added 7 rebounds each.

It would take someone 37 hours and 2,476 miles to drive from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Lawton, Oklahoma - arguably the longest distance between two PBL cities. The Rainmen's opening night road trip was of a more conventional nature - by airplane - but after a 102-87 loss to the Cavs on Sunday night, the Nova Scotia crew felt every mile of that trip. Tony Bennett (17 pts) and Eric Crookshank (16 pts) were the top point-earners for the Rainmen; their top centers, Gordon Malone and Shagari Alleyne, each pulled down eight rebounds apiece. Gary Ervin added 11 points, while Desmond Ferguson put 10 points on the board.

Micheal Ray Richardson's Cavalry hosted their first PBL contest Sunday afternoon, as the Halifax Rainmen were welcomed to the Sooner State. What a welcome. Starting off with a 31-18 run in the first quarter by the Cavs, Lawton-Fort Sill dried up the Rainmen 102-87. Brandon Dean, who played for the Cavs in their previous run in another league, scored his team's first PBL points, and finished with 19 on the night. DeAnthony Bowden led the Cavs with 20 points in 26 minutes of play; Tim Ellis was the top rebounder, with 11 boards. Wayne Marshall (18 pts) and Shawn Daniels (10 pts) also scored in double figures for the Cavs.

The "New England Border War" renewed its rivalry for the 2010 PBL season, as the Vermont Frost Heaves journeyed to the Granite State for a matchup with their old rivals, the Manchester Millrats. Both teams had new head coaches and new players, but the Millrats' solid play in the third and fourth quarters allowed Manchester to take a 102-93 win. With 8:40 remaining in the third quarter, Manchester held on to a tenuous 70-67 lead, but Alexus Foyle's three pointer, followed by a steal and lay in by Marlowe Currie, pushed the lead back to eight at 75-67. David Cooper's three pointer near the end of the game sealed the win for Manchester. "It was great to win our home opener, the crowd was pumped up and really into the game," said Cooper after the game. Five Millrats finished the game in double figures - Dwight Brewington led the Millrats with 19 points while Anthony Anderson and Marlowe Currie added 15 apiece. Stanley Ocitti contributed 11 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Lou McCroskey also chipped in with 10 points.

The Maryland Greenhawks got to play the first PBL games contested on the sunny island of Puerto Rico, as they traveled to Arecibo for a two-game series with the Puerto Rico Capitanes. Although the GreenHawks started off with a 5-0 run in their first game Saturday night, the Capitanes ran the score up and eventually took a 109-100 win over Maryland. Kevin Mickens' 18 points were the high tally for the GreenHawks; while Gordon Klaiber added 16 points of his own.

Sunday evening's rematch was a more contested affair, and the GreenHawks and Capitanes swapped the lead several times. But in the end, the GreenHawks could not make a six-point fourth quarter lead hold up, and fell 99-91 to the Capitanes. Scooter Sherill finished the night with 20 points, while Lou White had a double-double of 11 rebounds and 10 points. Harvey Thomas scored 16 points for the GreenHawks; other Maryland players in double figures included Byron Mouton (11 pts) and Gordon Klaiber (10 pts).

As 2,000 people packed Coliseo Manuel Iguina Reyes de Arecibo for the Capitanes' first PBL game, the Maryland GreenHawks hoped to take at least one victory against the Capitanes in their two-game opening weekend series. On Saturday night, despite falling behind 5-0 at the start of the game, the Capitanes rallied with a 22-5 run to end the first quarter, on their way to an opening night 109-100 triumph. Angelo Reyes finished the night with a double-double of 23 points and 20 rebounds, while Larry Ayuso led the Capitanes in scoring with 25 points.

On Sunday night, the two teams faced each other again, and the intensity on the court increased. The lead swapped several times between Maryland and Puerto Rico, with the Capitanes down by as many as six points in the final quarter, before Larry Ayuso and Angelo Reyes closed the gap, and eventually gave the Capitanes their second win, 99-91. Reyes led the Capitanes with a double-double of 34 points and 25 rebounds, while Ayuso scored 26 points; Jeff Aubry pulled down 16 boards of his own.

With a raucous crowd cheering their hometown team on at Laval University's PEPS, the Quebec Kebs had a strong opening night, taking a 100-85 victory over the Buffalo Stampede. Ryan Holmes led the Kebs with 25 points, including six three-point shots, while Cordell Jeanty added 21 points of his own. Jeanty also led the Kebs in rebounds, with eight. The victory was tempered, however, when Jonas Pierre, while fighting for a ball in the paint, fell awkwardly on his shoulder. He received ice packs for his shoulder and did not return to the game.

Without their key center, the Kebs could not survive a Sunday night battle at PEPS against the Rochester Razorsharks, losing 111-86. Although the Kebs did cut their deficit at halftime to 11 points, the Sharks came back with a vengeance and took the win. "We gave everything we had ... it's hard to go up against a team with Rochester's history," said Kebs head coach Alejandro Hasbani. Jean-Phillippe Morin was the high scorer for Quebec, with 11 points; Cordell Jeanty added a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds.

A new season for the Rochester Razorsharks, and the two-time PBL champions showed they haven't lost a step, by taking a road victory over the Quebec Kebs, 111-86. The Sharks absolutely dominated the game from start to finish, as six of the Sharks scored in double figures. Keith Friel's 17 points in the night gave him 707 points for his PBL career, allowed Friel to pass Stanley Thomas for first place on the all-time PBL scoring list. Lincoln Glass and Jerice Crouch added 13 points apiece, while Randy Gill scored 10 in his first game against Kebs head coach Alejandro Hasbani, for whom Gill played last season in Montreal.

It's 128 miles to drive from Barre to Manchester, one of the shortest trips between two PBL cities - only the quick New York State Thruway jaunt between Rochester and Buffalo has a shorter distance. This has allowed the Vermont Frost Heaves and Manchester Millrats to develop a solid border rivalry, and both teams have loyal fans who will make the jaunt from one city to another to support their squads. The Green Mountain crew could not take a victory in Manchester Sunday night, however, finishing with a 102-93 loss. At one point, the Heaves could not get past a stingy Manchester defense, and finished the half on a 45-35 deficit. Stephen McDowell led the Frost Heaves with a solid 22 points, while Ross Demasi added 11 points and 17 rebounds and Troy Jackson scored 10 points.

Game reports compiled via team press releases, and from articles appearing in newspapers from the teams' home locations.
