PawSox' Snyder, Indians' Adams named IL players of the week

May 3, 2004 - International League (IL1) News Release

The International League announced today that Pawtucket infielder Earl Snyder and Indianapolis pitcher Mike Adams have been named the League's Batter and Pitcherof- the-Week for the period of April 26-May 2. Both are the first members of their respective teams to earn an IL weekly award in 2004.

Pawtucket infielder EARL SNYDER hit at a .462 clip on the week, keying a PawSox offense that has averaged over 10 runs a game since last Monday. The first baseman had a solo home run as part of a three-hit effort in last Monday's 9-7 loss at Ottawa. The PawSox put together a 14-run third inning in pasting the Lynx 16-1 Tuesday night as Snyder, a New Britain, CT native, had a pair of hits (including a two-run homer), scored twice and drove in three runs in the frame. After doubling in Wednesday's 9-0 win, Snyder collected three hits in a 16-7 thumping of Ottawa on Thursday afternoon. In addition to his fifth home run of the season, Earl had a pair of singles, drove in two runs and scored twice in the win. Pawtucket traveled to Buffalo on Friday and saw their three-game winning streak end with a 7-4 loss to the Bisons. The right-handed Snyder again homered and drove in a pair of runs on two hits. The 27-year-old got the Red Sox started on the right foot in Saturday's night's 10-2 win over Buffalo, launching a three-run homer in the top of the first inning. Rain postponed yesterday's game with the Bisons. With 12 hits on the week, Snyder saw his batting average rise over 100 points (from .157 to its' current .260 mark). His seven home runs place him in a tie for fourth among IL batters while his .584 slugging percentage places tenth in the loop.

Snyder is back for a second season in Pawtucket after helping the club to the North Division Title last year. In 130 games for the PawSox, Earl hit .255 and had 22 HR and 71 RBI (marking the fifth straight season he had hit at least 20 HR and driven in 70 runs). Snyder was originally selected by the New York Mets in the 36th Round of the 1998 June Draft and spent four seasons in the organization before being traded to Cleveland in 2001. After one season with the Indians (and Triple-A Buffalo), he was claimed by Boston in January, 2003. Indianapolis right-hander MIKE ADAMS turned in a pair of dominating appearances in relief this past week to earn Pitcher-of-the-Week honors. He entered last Monday's game in Louisville with one out in the sixth inning and fanned the first two batters he faced to end the frame. He struck out the side in the seventh as well before leaving the game. He returned to the mound on Saturday night, entering the game in the fifth inning in relief of starter Matt Childers. He finished the game, allowing just one hit in his longest stint of the season. In addition, the Corpus Christi, TX native fanned eight batters and collected his first win at the Triple-A level, preserving the Tribe's 5-3 win over Toledo. Mike leads all Indianapolis pitchers in strikeouts and is tied for seventh among IL pitchers (with the most Ks of any relief pitcher).

A four-year professional, Adams is in his first season at the Triple-A level after working his way through the Brewers' organization. He spent the 2003 season at Double-A Huntsville, going 3-7 with 3.15 ERA and setting career-highs with 45 appearances, 14 saves, 74.1 innings pitched and 83 strikeouts. The 25-year-old began his career with Ogden in 2001 after being signed as a non-drafted free agent, then pitched for three clubs in 2002, posting a combined 3-1 record with 11 saves and 61 strikeouts.
