Pawtucket, RI - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost to the Pawtucket Red Sox by a score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in front of a crowd of 12, 255. Jeff Mandel started for the Chiefs and took the loss throwing five innings and surrendering two runs. Jason Botts scored the only Syracuse run of the game with a solo home run off of Beckett in the fourth inning. Syracuse finished the pre All-Star break segment of the season two games out of first place in the North Division behind Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Pawtucket (41-49) scored first with two runs off of Mandel in the first inning. The PawSox used four singles to score the runs which were knocked in by IL All-Star Bubba Bell and Mark Wagner. Four of the five hits surrendered by Mandel came in that first inning.
Sunday was the second straight day that Syracuse (51-40) scored just one run. That came in the fourth when Jason Botts launched a Josh Beckett fastball over the right centerfield fence for his fifth home run of the season.
Six different Chiefs batters collected a base hit, with none of them earning a multi-hit game. Ryan Kalish and Lars Anderson each had multi-hit games for the PawSox with two each. Kalish also stole three bases.
The PawSox were just 2-11 with runners in scoring position but the Chiefs did not have quite as many chances. Syracuse went just 0-2 with RISP.
The three day International League All-Star break begins on Monday. Chase Lambin will represent Syracuse at the All-Star game at Lehigh Valley's Coca-Cola Park on July 14th. Lambin enters the break batting .288 with 11 home runs and 45 RBI.
The Chiefs are back in action on Thursday once again against Pawtucket. Syracuse will host the PawSox for a four game series. It will be the middle of a stretch of six straight against Pawtucket, the longest span of consecutive games against any opponent this year for the Chiefs. First pitch on Thursday night is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
