Schaumburg Flyers News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL-The Flyers played two on Saturday, as they split a doubleheader Saturday night at Alexian Field against the Winnipeg Goldeyes in front of 5,278 fans. The Goldeyes would take game one, winning 5-2. The Flyers would answer in game two with a 2-1 seven-inning win.

With Carmen Pignatiello throwing over 40 pitches in Fridays suspended game, Dustin Glant continued where the game left off on Saturday in game one, throwing seven innings for the Flyers, giving up four earned runs while striking out six in the loss. The game resumed with the score 1-0 Winnipeg entering in the top of the second where Glant got out of a jam so Pignatiello got no more runs to his credit. Richard Mercado led off the bottom of the second with a double. Felix Jose ripped a single up the middle, evening the score at one.

The score wouldn't stay tied for long, as the Goldeyes scored two in the top of the third. A two-run double by Mark Minicozzi drove in Vince Harrison and Brent Metheny, making it 3-1. An RBI double by Juan Diaz in the fourth, along with a solo home run by Diaz in the sixth gave the Goldeyes a 5-1 lead. A Jeff Dunbar RBI single in the sixth made the score 5-2, but it wouldn't be enough to defeat Winnipeg.

Goldeyes starter Ace Walker got the win, moving him to 10-6 on the season. The righty struck out three and gave up twelve hits in the victory. Chris Homer picked up his sixth save of the season, striking out two in the final frame.

Game two got started shortly after the completion of game one, with Tom Lyons getting the spot start for the Flyers.

The Flyers wasted no time taking the lead in game two. Antoan Richardson got aboard with a bunt single, and a throwing error by the Goldeyes moved Richardson to third base with one out. With the infield drawn in, Ferrante lined a ground ball to third base. Running on contact, Richardson was tagged out at home on a close play. With Ferrante now on first, Mercado smashed a single to move Ferrante up to second. A Felix Jose single drove in Ferrante, giving the Flyers a 1-0 lead.

Winnipeg looked to answer in the third. A Cody Ehlers double got the inning started for the Goldeyes. With Kurt Crowell up, Ehlers moved up to third on a wild pitch. A groundout by Crowell left Ehlers at third with one out. With Minicozzi up and the Flyers infield in, a shot to short led to an error by Travis Brown, scoring Ehlers tying the game at 1-1.

Newcomer Joe Pauley led off the third looking for his first extra base hit of the season. Pauley found what he was looking for with a solo home run-his first professional homer-over the left field wall to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead.

That would be all the Flyers needed, as the combination of Tom Lyons, Alain Quijano, Jim Popp, Cephas Howard and Jason Richardson shut down the Goldeyes from the third inning on. Popp would get the win, moving him to 3-1 on the season. Richardson recorded his fourth save as a Flyer.

The Flyers now stand at 38-50 on the season, three and a half games back of the fourth and final playoff spot. The Goldeyes move to 50-38, good for third in the division.

Schaumburg will send LHP Ryan Gehring (2-1, 4.05) to the mound tomorrow. Winnipeg will counter with RHP Andrew Cruse (5-5, 4.70). It's family day at the Alexian Field tomorrow, as the Flyers will play their final home game of the season. First pitch is at 1:20.
