Paul Conway Elected To USL Hall Of Fame

Charleston, SC. Former Charleston Battery forward Paul Conway has been elected to the USL Hall of Fame and will be inducted at the 2009 USL AGM at the end of November. Paul Conway played seven seasons with the Battery from 1998 - 2004 appearing in 194 games and is the all time leading goal scorer at the club with 91 goals and 34 assists in all competitions for a total of 216 points.

"I am very honored and proud to be recognized for my contribution to the USL," said Conway. "My years in Charleston and brief time in Portland provided many memorable and enjoyable moments. As the USL continues to play an important role in the development of soccer throughout North America and beyond, being recognized as an individual who helped contribute, albeit in a small way, is personally very rewarding."

Conway enjoyed several banner years with the Battery including 2001 when he scored a club record 27 goals and was named the USL1 MVP, the only Charleston Battery player to achieve that honor.

Conway was a member of the Charleston Battery's 2003 USL First Division championship winning team and scored a goal in the final as Charleston defeated the Minnesota Thunder by a score of three goals to none.

In 2005, Conway moved to finish his career with the Portland Timbers, where his father was serving as an assistant coach. He scored just one goal in his limited action on the year, but finished his USL-1 career with 79 goals and 29 assists in 178 regular season matches, logging just under 15,000 minutes played.

Before the Battery, the Hartwick College (1988-92) All-American represented the United States at the U23 and B Levels and went on to play in England with some success in the lower tiers. He helped lead Carlisle United FC (1993-97) to the League Championship in 1995 and to two League Cup Finals appearances in 1995 and 1997, winning the cup in 1997. He moved on to Northampton Town FC the following season (1997-98) before returning to the US.

Conway currently lives in Charleston with his wife Jennifer and daughters, Madeleine (13) and Gwendolyn (9). He is a practicing attorney with most of his work involving corporate transactions for energy corporations. He is still involved with the community through the Big Brother/Big Sister Mentoring Program and his service as Technical Advisor for Cainhoy Soccer Club. Conway also occasionally serves as a color commentator for USL on Fox Soccer Channel broadcasts.

Conway will join 19 previous players inducted into the USL Hall of Fame, joining Chris Armas (inducted 2002), Mark Baena (2003), Marcelo Balboa (2006), Mike Cook (2006), Steve Famiglietta (2006), Julie Foudy (2006), Charmaine Hooper (2002), Saeed Kadkhodaian (2006), Manny Lagos (2006), Amos Magee (2008), Brian McBride (2002), Chris Melton (2006), Greg Nichols (2006), Pat Onstad (2008), Tony Sanneh (2002), Giovanni Savarese (2007), David Swissler (2006), Rob Ukrop (2007) and Kim Wyant (2003).
