The Week in Review

March 21st/08- Regina Pats-2 vs. Swift Current Broncos-1

The Pats started the 2007-08 post season the way the wanted too, with a bang... They came out hitting everything at the start of the game, setting a physical tone for the game and series ... The Pats kept the physical play up and it would pay off, as Colten Teubert scored his 1st career playoff goal to give the Pats a 1-0 lead ... The Broncos would tie things up on a pretty passing play, as the two teams would head to the dressing rooms tied at one ... In the 2nd the Pats powerplay would strike again as Tim Kraus jumped on a rebound to make the score 2-1 in favour of the Pats ... In the 3rd the Pats would press the Broncos outshooting them 12-6 but insurance was not needed as Linden Rowat kicked away all 6 shots he faced in the period, leading the Pats to the 2-1 victory .... With the win the Pats take a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series.

March 22nd/08- Regina Pats-3 vs. Swift Current Broncos-5

The Pats started game #2 the way they wanted, with Ryan DePape deflecting a J.D Watt slap shot, to take an early 1-0 lead Saturday night... The Broncos would respond with two of their own, before Matt Strueby scored his 1st career playoff goal, to knot things at 2-2 after one ... In the 2nd the Pats would take the lead back as Jordan Eberle scored his 1st of the playoffs on a nice feed from Logan Pyett ... In the 3rd the Broncos' powerplay would come alive as Zak Smith and Justin Dowling both scored to give the Broncos the lead ... The Broncos would add an empty netter for insurance, as the Broncos would tie the best of seven series at 1-1.

Series Split at Brandt Centre

The Pats and Broncos split the opening two games of their Eastern Conference Quarter-Finals series this past weekend at the Brandt Centre. The Pats opened up the playoffs with an impressive 2-1 victory over the Broncos Friday night, with Tim Kraus netting the game winner mid-way through the 2nd period. The following night, the Broncos exacted some revenge, as they managed three 3rd period goals on their way to a 5-3 victory. The series now shifts back to Swift Current for games #3 and #4 on Tuesday and Wednesday, before returning to the Brandt Centre for game #5 on Friday, March 28th at 7:00pm. Games #3 and #4 are both slated for 7:30pm at the Credit Union I-Plex in Swift Current.

Pats Find Themselves In Familiar Situation

Last season the Regina Pats and Swift Current Broncos split the opening two games of their best of seven series. The Pats then went on to win three of the next four games to close out the series in six games. The Pats playoff record in Swift Current last season was a perfect 3-0, including winning game #6 of the series in overtime. Fast forward to this season and the Pats find themselves heading to Swift Current in a very similar situation. The Pats who had a record of 0-1-1-1 in the regular season, will need to win at least one game in Swift Current if they want to move on in the WHL playoffs.

Pats Take Costly Penalties in Defeat

When the Pats are looking back at their 5-3 loss against the Broncos Saturday night, one of the areas they will need to focus on is the timely penalties they took. The Pats penalty kill had been perfect heading into the 3rd period of game #2 Saturday night, until two costly penalties put the Pats down by two skaters. On that man advantage Zak Smith scored on the 5 on 3 man advantage, followed by Justin Dowling's 2nd of the game just a minute later to give the Broncos the lead, which they would not relinquish.

Playoff Veteran's Lead The Way

Although the Pats' dropped game #2 of their best-of-seven series against the Broncos, their playoff seniors lead the way in each game. 20-year old forward's J.D Watt and Tim Kraus, who were both acquired earlier in the season for their playoff experience, each collected 2 points over the weekend. Watt leads all the Pats in career WHL playoff games with 57, while Kraus is close behind with 50. Both players played last season with the Vancouver Giants who won the Memorial Cup Championship.

Pats' Add Weal To The Mix

The Pats have added another Midget player to the mix as 15 year old sniper Jordan Weal has joined the team. Weal, who played with the Vancouver NW Giants this season, was the Pats 4th round Bantam selection (79th overall) in 2007. The speedy forward was recently knocked out of the BC Major Midget League Playoffs. Weal lead the league in scoring after the regular season, with 39 goals and 61 assists, for 100 points. The 15 year old sniper played 3 games with the Pats earlier in the season recording one assist; he also suited up for game #2 of the playoff series Saturday night ...
