Fayetteville Patriots News Release
Last season, the Patriots shot a team-record 54.2 percent at the Crown Coliseum against North Charleston. Friday, the Patriots broke that record by shooting 56 percent. The Patriots shot better than 50 percent in every quarter. It's the first time they have accomplished that feat in their short history. Friday also marked the first time the Patriots have been perfect at the line as they went 11-for-11.
"The Patriots shot 56 percent and all of their shots were high percentage shots,'' said Lowgators coach Doug Marty. "They were scoring before we were turning our heads.. The biggest part of our defensive game plan was transition defense, and it was torn to shreds."
Everything went right for the Patriots. On one play, Tierre Brown had a near steal. But the ball instead bounced of his leg and went into the arms of Terrell McIntyre. McIntyre lost the handle, but the ball landed in the hands of Devin Brown. He found a wide open Bryan Lucas for a layup. That was the kind of night it was for the Patriots.
The Lowgators sliced a 10-point first-quarter deficit to six with a Alpha Bangura layup. But the Patriots ended the half on a 15-4 run to take a 17-point halftime lead.
The Lowgators never got any closer than 14. The Patriots lead got as big as 28; their biggest lead of the season. The Patriots' lopsided win came six days after they blew a 23-point lead to Roanoke at home.
"We were conscious of the fact that the last time we had a big lead we last it at the end,'' Patriots forward Jeff Aubry said. "We played as if it was a tie game rather than playing like we were up 20."
The Lowgators played with just eight players. Ime Udoka led the short-handed Gators with 20 points, while Peter Cornell added 11 points and eight rebounds.
"Being short handed had absolutely nothing to do with the way we played tonight,'' Marty said. "With the guys we have, we can play good basketball. But we didn't."
