Somerset Patriots News Release
Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots defeated the Long Island Ducks 4-1 at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Wednesday evening.
The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Left fielder Gera Alvarez doubled and scored on an RBI double by designated hitter Brandon Larson.
The Patriots added two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Second baseman David Housel singled, Alvarez walked, and Larson followed with an RBI single. First baseman Josh Pressley then drove in Alvarez with an RBI single.
The Ducks got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Second baseman Brent Abernathy tripled and scored on an RBI single by designated hitter Carl Everett.
Somerset extended the lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Right fielder Vito Chiaravalloti doubled and was pinch run for by Sean Smith. Third baseman Matt Hagen drove in Smith with an RBI single for a 4-1 lead.
Patriots starter Brian Reith (1-0) picked up the win, allowing an earned run on six hits and two strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched. Ducks starter Jim Magrane (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in six innings pitched. Brett Prinz earned his fifth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning pitched.
The 2008 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford will continue at home on Thursday evening with a 7:05 pm game against the York Revolution. The game includes Dancing With The Patriots Night.
