Patriots beat Bears with bats

NEWARK, NJ - August 8, 2006 - The Newark Bears were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 11-6 Tuesday afternoon in front of 5,423 fans at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Despite the loss, the Bears remain in second place of the North Division with an 11-11 record.

The Bears scored runs in all but three innings receiving solo home runs from designated hitter Victor Valencia and right-fielder Al Benjamin, each for their tenth of the season. Shortstop Liu Rodriguez went 4-for-5 with four singles including two for RBIs. His RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning cut the Patriots lead to 8-6. Third baseman Victor Rodriguez finished the game 3-for-5 with three singles and a run scored.

Patriots right-fielder Ryan Radmanovich hit his 19th and 20th home runs of the season, with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to give the Patriots a 5-2 lead, and a solo home run in the top of the seventh giving Somerset a 7-4 lead. Somerset also received RBIs from catcher Travis Anderson, designated hitter Jeff Nettles, third baseman Patrick Boran, shortstop Kevin Nicholson, and first baseman Jim Burt Jr.

Joe Gannon (5-6) took the loss for the Bears allowing five earned runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings pitched striking out four, while Ben Crockett (7-6) earned the victory for the Patriots after pitching 5 2/3 innings, surrendering four runs on 11 hits striking out six.

The Bears and Patriots will play game two of the three game series Wednesday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm. Recently acquired Mike Cosgrove (0-0) will make his first start for the Bears, against Keith Ramsey (3-5) for the Patriots. All fans who wear Bears apparel to the box office will receive $1 off a box seat. If the Bears win, everyone may redeem their ticket stub for a future 2006 Newark Bears home game. Gates open at 6:05 pm.
