Fayetteville Patriots News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C., November 8, 2003 â The Fayetteville Patriots of the National Basketball Development League have acquired forward Tarvis Williams and released forward Donnell Knight, according to an announcement by NBDL director of basketball operations Chris Alpert and Patriots head coach Jeff Capel.
Williams, a 6-foot-9, 200-pound power forward from Hampton ('01), has played the last two years internationally. He played in France last season and in China in 2001-02. As a senior at Hampton, Williams averaged 21.9 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. He also led the nation as a senior with 4.6 blocked shots per game (147 total).
Knight, the Patriots ninth selection (54th overall) in the 2003 NBDL Draft, played in five games and averaged 11.2 minutes, 1.6 points and 1.4 rebounds.
Williams is expected to be in uniform when Fayetteville (4-2) hosts Columbus (0-6) Friday at the Crown Coliseum. He will wear jersey #52. The Patriots roster consists of 10 players.
The Patriots transactions since the season started include releasing Sam Clancy, Kueth Duany and Donnell Knight and acquiring Britton Johnsen, Chudney Gray and Tarvis Williams respectively.
Williams vaulted himself into the national spotlight when he hit a four-footer in the last seven seconds of a first round Midwest Regional matchup against No. 2 seed Iowa State in 2001 to lead the Hampton Pirates to an upset win.
He led the nation in blocked shots three straight years and was the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2001. The MEAC tournament MVP award also went to Williams in 2001.
