Bellingham Slam News Release
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Mike Parker became the first Slam player to pass the half-century mark in points as the Bellingham Slam closed out the regular season with a 141-102 victory over the Fresno Heatwave at Whatcom Pavilion Wednesday night.
Parker, who went for 51 points, surpassed the previous record of 47 set by Caleb Gervin in the final game of the 2005-06 season, when the Slam lost to the San Jose Skyrockets in the quarterfinals of the ABA playoffs.
Unlike Monday night's rout, Fresno was able to hang with Bellingham during the early stages of the game. It wasn't until the Slam went on a 21-2 run to close out the second quarter that the Slam were able to distance themselves from the Heatwave. The Slam led 73-43 at halftime.
With a 30 point cushion going into the second half, the Heatwave were able to play the Slam fairly even the rest of the way, as the Slam were only able to increase their lead by nine points through the third and fourth quarters.
The second-largest crowd of the season of 830 saw the Slam close out their regular season schedule with a 14-3 record at Whatcom Pavilion. Overall, the Slam finished the franchise's second regular season 22-10.
Parker's 51 points paced three Slam players with 20-plus points. Jacob Stevenson scored 23 points while Michael Jones added 21.
Derek Foster took second-best scoring honors in the game with 35 points, while Richard Blowe contributed a double-double of 21 points and 15 rebounds.
The Slam now wait for the ABA to complete its regular season on March 10. At that point the Slam will learn their playoff schedule, with at least one playoff tilt, either a first or second round game, slated to take place in the friendly confines of Whatcom Pavilion.
