Parker Recipient of WHL Governors Award
May 6, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release
Calgary, AB - WHL Commissioner Ron Robison announced today that the recipient of the 2014-15 WHL Governors Award is former Regina Pats Owner, President and Governor Russ Parker. The award was presented to Mr. Parker at the 2015 WHL Awards today in Calgary.
The WHL Governors Award is presented annually to an individual, who through their outstanding achievements and service to the League, has contributed to the growth and development of the WHL. The WHL Governors Award is the highest honour the WHL bestows on an individual who has been associated with the League.
Russ and his wife Diane purchased the Regina Pats in 1995. Prior to the purchase, the franchise had been struggling both on and off the ice with season tickets at an all-time low. Under the direction of Russ Parker in his capacity as both the President and Governor of the franchise, one of Canada's most storied hockey teams was quickly rejuvenated. Not only did season tickets improve dramatically during Parker's regime, but the support they provided for minor hockey and local charities rallied the community and helped the franchise win the bid to host the 2001 MasterCard Memorial Cup and many other national events.
A native of Moosomin, SK, Russ Parker was not only instrumental in stabilizing the Regina Pats franchise, but guided the operation of the Pats organization for nearly two decades before selling the Club to the Queen City Sports and Entertainment Group last year.
