Crystal Palace Baltimore News Release

June 15th 2010 - Richmond, VA - Crystal Palace Baltimore was defeated in the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tonight, as a goal from Matthew Delicate in the 119th minute gave the Richmond Kickers a 1-0 victory.

Richmond created more scoring chances in the first 45 minutes, out-shooting Baltimore, 6-2. 15 minutes in, Edson Elcock found Jonathan Villanueva inside the box, but his header was sent just wide of the goal. Three minutes later, Matthew Delicate broke free and went one-on-one with Palace goalkeeper Evan Bush. Bush was able to come out on top, stopping the striker from netting the first goal of the night. Baltimore was lucky not to give up an own goal on 32 minutes, as a cross from Mike Burke was deflected against the post.

Nearly ten minutes into the second half, Dave Hertel delivered a pass in to a diving Elcock, but his header missed the Palace net by mere inches. At the 56 minute mark, Gary Brooks was able to maneuver his way around for a shot, but his effort sailed well over the goal. With both teams still tied at 0-0, the latter stages of regulation time became more physical, as both sides were looking to avoid the possibility of extra time. In the 70th minute, Bobby Foglesong and Gary Brooks were shown yellow cards after both were involved in an on-pitch dispute.

With ten minutes to play, another Richmond header, this time by Delicate, was sent skimming over the crossbar. In the final minute of regulation time, the Kickers had a flurry of three shots, but none of them could find the back of the net.

The game was headed for extra time, consisting of two fifteen-minute halves. After the first extra session expired, substitute Neal Barlow nearly put Richmond on the scoreboard in the 107th minute, but his shot struck the crossbar. Seven minutes later, Baltimore's Randi Patterson had a golden opportunity to put the visitors ahead. After Kickers' netminder Ronnie Pascale came off of his line, Patterson found himself with an open net to shoot at. The forward's effort clipped the crossbar and went over the net for a Richmond goal kick. Richmond finally broke the deadlock in the penultimate minute of the match. Stephen Nsereko found Matthew Delicate, who slipped the ball past Bush to give the Kickers the lone goal they needed to secure the win.

This is the third year out of four that Baltimore has failed to reach the second round of the U.S. Open Cup. In 2007 and 2009, Baltimore lost to the Ocean City Barons of the Premier Development League. Richmond will host Real Maryland FC next Tuesday in a second round match.
