Biloxi Shuckers News Release
MONTGOMERY, AL - Two home runs scored all three runs for the Montgomery Biscuits (14-11) as the Biloxi Shuckers (12-14) dropped their Saturday night game 3-2 at Riverwalk Stadium.
Biloxi leapt out to a lead in the first inning. Sal Frelick doubled on the first pitch of the game and two tosses later, Freddy Zamora singled on the infield. Garrett Mitchell was hit on the next pitch, loading the bases with no outs. RHP Evan McKendry struck out the next batter before Felix Valerio lifted a ball into left field that scored Frelick, putting the Shuckers up 1-0. McKendry responded by retiring the next 10 batters he faced, including striking out seven.
RHP Lucas Erceg (L, 0-3) needed just seven pitches to retire the side in the first but ran into trouble in the second. Grant Witherspoon singled and Jordan Qsar followed with a two-run homer to right, his sixth of the year, moving the Biscuits ahead 2-1.
Montgomery added a run to their advantage in the fifth on a solo home run by Brett Wisley, his fourth of the season. RHP Caleb Sampen (W, 1-1) entered in the fifth and sat the side down in order, but Biloxi struck back for a run in the sixth. Frelick stroked a single and stole second before a Zamora single moved Frelick to third. Mitchell then hit into a double play that scored Frelick, drawing the Shuckers within a run at 3-2.
The Shuckers best chance to tie the game came in the seventh. Valerio doubled to start the inning and advanced to third on a sharp groundout by Thomas Dillard. In the ensuing at bat, Jakson Reetz hit a ground ball to short that Valerio attempted to score on, but shortstop Greg Jones threw home in time to cut down Valerio. A groundout by Cam Devanney ended the Shuckers' threat in the seventh.
Looking to avoid the series sweep, the Shuckers conclude their six-game tilt with the Biscuits on Sunday afternoon at Riverwalk Stadium. In a rematch of their first game, RHP Tyler Herb takes the hill for Biloxi against Biscuits' RHP Taj Bradley for a 3:33 pm first pitch. The game can be heard locally on WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9 or online here.
