Evansville BlueCats News Release
The Evansville BlueCats are pleased to announce that linebacker John Winchester and wide receiver Levander Segars have received UIF Player of the Week "Honorable Mention" honors from the league for their performance in the team's Week Seven game against the Peoria Rough Riders. Winchester earned Defensive Player of the Week "Honorable Mention" honors as Segars was recognized as the weekly "Honorable Mention" for Special Teams.
This marks the fourth time that Winchester has been recognized by the league for his superior defensive play, as he's been chosen as the runner-up for Player of the Week in 4 of the 6 games he's played with the BlueCats. His 4 "Honorable Mention" honors lead all players in the UIF. He also earned the honor in Weeks 1, 2, and 5. Last Saturday against Peoria, he led both teams with 7 solo tackles and 8 total tackles in the game. He also forced a fumble and broke up a pass. He leads the league in tackles per game (9.6 per contest) and tackles for loss (10.5 for 25 yards) so far this season. He's also on pace to shatter the current team and UIF league record for tackles in a single season set by last year's UIF Defensive MVP, former BlueCats safety Connie Brown.
This week is the first time for Levander Segars to be recognized by the league in their weekly awards. Last week against Peoria, Segars made 2 critical tackles on special teams, and had 3 tackles in the game. He also caught one pass for a 30-yard touchdown.
BlueCats Head Coach John Hart said, "Levander made two big tackles for us and hustled all over the field, especially on special teams. His hustle and overall effort really helped set the tone for us in the ball game. I'm very excited that he's been chosen and will receive the recognition he deserves."
Segars joined the BlueCats in Week 2 against Omaha. In 5 games with the team this season, Segars has caught 9 passes for 113 yards and 2 touchdowns. He's also returned 12 kicks for 181 yards and made 5.5 tackles in 2006.
John Winchester and Levander Segars were scouted and placed by the coaches and staff of the indoor football scouting bureau, the official scouting service of the Evansville BlueCats.
The UIF Offensive Player of the Week for Week Seven was Sioux Falls Storm quarterback Terrance Bryant and the Defensive Player of the Week was his teammate Mark Blackburn. The Special Teams Player of the Week was awarded to Bloomington DB/KR Dion Brown.
Last season, Evansville BlueCats players received UIF Player of the Week honors a record 8 times. No other team in UIF history has had more Player of the Week awards and honorable mentions than Evansville.
Don't miss your chance to see John, Levander, and the rest of the Evansville BlueCats this Thursday and every Thursday night at Metro Sports Center. Every week during the season, the BlueCats have an open practice session for 7-8pm at Metro Sports, with the players and coaches available to interact with fans and the media after practice from 8-9pm. Practice is open to everyone and admission is free.
This week the Evansville BlueCats are getting ready to travel to Lexington to take on the Lexington Horsemen at Rupp Arena. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30pm (Evansville time) this Saturday, May 13th, and this game can be heard on ESPN Radio 94.9 in Evansville.
