New Orleans VooDoo News Release
NEW ORLEANS, LA (October 4, 2010) - Two more players have been assigned to the New Orleans VooDoo roster for the 2011 season which starts March 4, 2011: WR Derrick Lewis (6'2", 190, San Diego State) and DB Darrick Brown (6'4", 200, McNeese State).
Derrick Lewis, a New Orleans native and former VooDoo player, played his first year of organized football at Sacramento City College in 1998 and he has been living the dream ever since. Lewis was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2002 by the New Orleans Saints and spent two years with the Saints before moving to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and then the Houston Texans in 2006. As a member of the Austin Wranglers (af2), Lewis held the single-season rushing record and was an instrumental player in the Wrangler's first ever playoff berth. Most recently, Lewis was a member of the Orlando Predators for 2010 and is excited about returning home to New Orleans to play for the VooDoo.
When asked about Derrick Lewis, Head Coach Derek Stingley said, "This is Lewis' second stint with the VooDoo. Lewis is a smooth route runner and he knows how to get open against almost any defensive back. I'm very excited to have a player like Derrick Lewis sign with the VooDoo!"
Darrick Brown, another familiar face to New Orleans fans is a native of Tangipahoa, LA and signed with the Oakland Raiders as an undrafted free agent out of McNeese State in 2008. During a four-year career at McNeese State, Brown played both wide receiver and defensive back for the football team and earned All-America honors as a jumper in track and field. Brown was a 2009 member of the New Orleans Saints roster. After being released just prior to the Super Bowl, Brown was signed by the Indianapolis Colts the next week for the trip to the Big Game!
Coach Stingley said, "Darrick Brown is a huge signing for the VooDoo. He spent part of last year with the Saints and finished the year with the Colts. He's a big defensive back that can run and cover! I'm looking for him to come in and make an immediate impact."
