Lafayette Aviators News Release

Lafayette, IN- The Lafayette Aviators (20-19) lost a high scoring affair 17-13 Friday night to the Chillicothe Paints (25-14).

There was no shortage of offense in Friday's contest. Both teams opened up with two runs in the first inning. Chillicothe got their first two runs on two hits and one Aviators error in the first. Lafayette only mustered up one hit in the inning but got some help when the Paints walked in a run and then allowed the Aviators to tie the game on a passed ball.

With the game tied 2-2 in the third inning, Chillicothe took the lead with three consecutive hits to bring in two runs and making the score 4-2. In the bottom half of the third, Blake Schmitt (Purdue) drew a walk with two outs. After Schmitt reached, Matt Mackey (Eastern Illinois) singled and then Alex Dorethy (Western Illinois) doubled to right field score Schmitt and cut the Chillicothe lead to 4-3.

After the third inning, the teams traded momentum through the middle innings. Kollyn All (Butler) demolished a ball to left field to give Lafayette the lead at 5-4. Then in the fifth, it looked like the Paints might run away with the game when the visitors slapped up seven runs on six hits to push the score to 11-5. Lafayette responded with a five-spot in the bottom of the fifth. Alex Dorethy delivered a solo homer to start off the hitting spree, and then Zach Heeke (Central Michigan) singled, Zach Schwartzenberger (Toledo) was hit by a pitch, and Miles Simington (Purdue) singled to load the bases. With the bases juiced, Chris Monroe (Illinois-Springfield) doubled to bring clear the base paths. Kollyn All singled to score Monroe for the fifth and final run of the inning. After the adventurous fifth, the score sat at 11-10 in favor of Chillicothe.

The sixth inning was interesting as well. Five runs came in for Chillicothe from three hits and two Aviators errors in the field. Lafayette got two back in the home half of the inning. Zach Schwartzenberger singled with the bases loaded to bring in the Aviators 11th run of the day. After the Schwartzy single, Miles Simington scored on a passed ball to make it 16-12 Chillicothe.

In the seventh, Keolu Ramos (Arizona State) doubled with two outs and then eventually scored on an errant throw to third. Friday was Ramos' first game back with Lafayette since suffering a nasty head injury when he was hit by a pitch in mid-June.

The Paints got an insurance run in the top of the ninth and the Aviators couldn't get anything going at the plate in the bottom half of the inning.
