TODAY IN PEORIA: Rain was again a factor on Tuesday at Peoria Sports Complex, as San Diego Padres pitchers were unable to throw live batting practice due to light showers during the 10th day of training camp ... pitcher Ben Howard, the Padres No. 5 prospect who is 7-13 with a 4.97 ERA with the Portland Beavers in two seasons, did manage to throw a bullpen session.

SPRING TUNE-UP: The Padres will hold an intra-squad game Wednesday in Peoria at 11 a.m., a day before their spring-opening Charity Game against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday, March 4, at Peoria Sports Complex ... Howard, who was one of 17 players to agree on a contract with the Padres on Tuesday, reportedly will get the start against the Mariners, taking the place of Jake Peavy, who is sidelined with a left oblique strain.

ON THE DOTTED LINE: The Padres today announced that they have agreed to terms with 17 players on contracts for the 2004 season ... agreeing to terms were right-handed pitchers Justin Germano, Ben Howard, Scott Linebrink, Chris Oxspring, Jake Peavy, Brian Sweeney, Jason Szuminski and Dennis Tankersley, left-handed pitcher Rusty Tucker, infielders Sean Burroughs, Bernie Castro, Khalil Greene and Ramon Vazquez, outfielders Freddy Guzman and Henri Stanley and catchers Humberto Quintero and Tom Wilson ... the Padres have now signed or agreed to terms with all 40 players currently on their 40-man roster.

KER-PLUNK: Shortstop Khalil Greene fouled a ball off his left shin on Sunday and was hit by a pitch from left-hander Eddie Oropesa on Monday ... Greene is fighting for the Padres starting shortstop spot this spring after batting .288 with 10 home runs and 47 RBIs in 76 games with the Beavers last year before making his major league debut in September.

BOOMER SOONER: Coming off back surgery, left-handed pitcher David Wells threw off a mound for the first time today ... it marked his first appearance on the mound since leaving after the first inning in Game 5 of the 2003 World Series on October 23, 2003 ... "I've spent a long time waiting for this day," said Wells, who signed with the Padres during the off-season. "It was good to get out there, make my pitches and follow through with no pain. I threw all my pitches at about 45-50 percent while going through the motions. The good thing is that I didn't compensate in any way, so that was a good sign. Now we just turn the page and look forward to next time." ... Wells went 15-7 with a 4.14 ERA with the New York Yankees in 2003 ... he has reached double figures in wins while tossing at least 200 innings in eight of the last nine seasons.

TICKET SALES DATE: The Beavers announced today that individual-game tickets for the 2004 season go on sale Saturday, March 27 at 10 a.m. ... on that date, tickets will be made available at PGE Park in addition to Portland-area Ticketmaster outlets, including select Fred Meyer and G.I. Joe's locations ... also, tickets may be purchased by phoning Ticketmaster at (503) 224-4400 or on-line at www.ticketmaster.com ... Beavers' individual-game tickets range from $6.00 - $11.00. ... specially priced $2.99 tickets for the Fred Meyer Family Section are available at select Fred Meyer locations as well beginning March 27.

BEAVERS CAMP OPENS: Beavers pitchers and catchers began their workouts Sunday at Peoria Sports Complex ... position players report this week with the first full-squad workout taking place on Sunday, March 7 ... the Beavers begin their 19-game spring training schedule Monday, March 15, taking on the Omaha Royals (Kansas City) in Surprise, Ariz.

SEASON TICKETS ON SALE: A variety of Beavers full- and partial-season ticket plans are currently available by calling the team's ticket department at (503) 553-5555.
