Pacific Coast League Names Players of the Week

April 22, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Marc Krauss of the Oklahoma City RedHawks and John Gast of the Memphis Redbirds have been named Pacific Coast League Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 15th-21st, the league office announced today.

In seven games, outfielder Marc Krauss hit .455 with four doubles, a triple and a home run to go along with 10 RBI, tied for tops in the league. Krauss' six extra base hits led the league and his exceptional play helped the RedHawks to three straight wins and only a half game out of first place in the American Southern Division behind Round Rock.

Krauss, 25, was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2nd round of the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Ohio University. The Ohio native was obtained by the Houston Astros last July in a trade with the Diamondbacks for third baseman Chris Johnson. Krauss was optioned to Oklahoma City and spent the second half of the 2012 season with the RedHawks. 2013 marks the first season that Krauss is starting at the Triple-A level; he is currently batting .327 with four home runs and 18 RBI.

John Gast put together two impressive outings going 1-0 over 13.2 innings pitched without giving up a run. At New Orleans on Tuesday the 16th, Gast earned a win after tossing seven scoreless innings while giving up six hits and a walk to go along with four strikeouts. In his next start on Sunday at home against Iowa, Gast again did not yield a run. He allowed only four hits and a walk while striking out six.

In his second season with Memphis, Gast is 2-0 in four starts and has yet to allow an opposing team to score a run, extending his scoreless innings pitched streak to 24.2. The Redbirds are currently in first place in the American Northern Division and have yet to lose a game in which Gast has started. The 24-year-old southpaw was drafted by St. Louis Cardinals in the 6th round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Florida State University.
