P-Rays to Assist Local Food Pantry

July 9, 2013 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Princeton WhistlePigs News Release

Several players from the 2013 Princeton Rays professional baseball team will be bagging groceries at several local Grant's Supermarket locations on both July 11 and July 12 from 10:00am-noon. Players wearing their P-Rays' jersey tops will be at Grant's Glenwood and Green Valley locations on Thursday. Then, Friday, players wearing their P-rays' jersey tops will be bagging groceries at the Princeton Grant's stores located on Main Street and also at the Crossroads locations. Shoppers entering the stores during those designated hours will be asked to buy an extra non-perishable canned food good item that patrons can in turn leave at the check-out counter with P-Rays' players to be donated to the local Tender Mercies Food Pantry to assist those in need.

The players have not been assigned their specific stores yet but it will be a pair of three-man crews each day. Players who are tentatively scheduled for Thursday are Jacob Faria, Travis Flores, Bralin Jackson, David Garcia, Isaac Gil, and D.J. Slaton. The players tentatively scheduled for the Friday sessions are Johnny Eierman, Spencer Edwards, Clayton Crum, Coty Blanchard, Luis Cabrera, and Oscar Armenta.

This will be the second summer that the Princeton Rays and Grant's Supermarket have partnered on this event. Last season, in it's inaugural edition, it was deemed as the largest single canned food donation campaign that assisted Tender Mercies in 2012.

Princeton Rays General Manager Jim Holland, for one, hopes this year's event will be even bigger.

"This was such a meaningful event to our players last year and several of them went into the store to buy some canned goods themselves to add to the large collection of cans they had already collected. The management team at Grant's has been great to work with and has embraced this concept wholeheartedly. I think we are all excited for Thursday and Friday to get here to get this underway," commented Holland, who added he hopes many Princeton Rays' fans and followers will be there to help this very worthy cause.

Persons needing additional information are invited to contact the Princeton Rays either by e-mail at princetonrays@frontier.com or by telephoning the team's main office at Hunnicutt Field at 304-487-2000.
