Princeton WhistlePigs News Release
MEASURING PAST VERSUS PRESENT: The Princeton Devil Rays enter play on August 16 with an overall record of 27-24. This represents already (with 15 games still to play in the 2005 season) a measurable improvement over the win totals of the past three years: 19 in 2002, 23 in 2003, and 23 in 2004.
UPDATE FOR ROAD GAME RADIO LISTENERS: The Wednesday, August 17 game at Danville versus the Braves will start at noon Eastern time. Listeners may pick up the play-by-play action of the game from the beginning via the internet by visiting either www.star95.com or www.princetondevilrays.com because the game by radio (1490-AM WAEY) will be joined in progress at 12:15 p.m. Eastern time.
WLODARCYZK CALLED UP: The P-Rays on August 15 lost the services of ace left-handed pitcher Mike Wlodarczyk as he was promoted to Tampa Bay's Hudson Valley team in the New York-Penn League. At the time of his departure, Mike ranked third in the Appalachian League in earned run average at 2.54 while striking out 50 hitters against only seven walks in 49.2 innings of work.
FURTHER SCANNING THE LEADER BOARD: In addition to Wlodarczyk, several other Princeton names remain among the leaders in the Appalachian League. Starting right-handed pitcher Jason Cayton has logged a 3.24 ERA while fanning 42 hitters against only ten walks in 41.2 innings of work. In batting average, outfielder Chris Cunningham (3rd at .331) and Tommy Lagreid (8th at .318) rank in the league's top ten. Cunningham is also in the league's top five in two other categories: on-base percentage (1st at .455) and runs scored (5th with 37). Outfielder Ryan Royster has the fourth best home run figure in the league with nine round-trippers while relief ace Robert Findlay is tied for the league lead in saves with 14. As a team, the P-Rays are tied for third in the league in hitting with a .272 batting average and are all alone in third place in the league in pitching with a 3.80 earned run average.
P-RAYS SLASH SOUVENIR PRICES: The remainder of the 2005 season can be bountiful for shoppers of P-Rays' merchandise. The team is now selling all P-Rays' souvenir shirts (T's, long-sleeved T's, and hoodies) at $5.00 off their standard list price and all P-Rays' caps also are now $5.00 off their standard list price for the balance of the 2005 season. All P-Rays' mini-bats and P-Rays' logo baseballs are now priced at $2.50 each. For more information, please stop by the stadium or you may contact the P-Rays by either e-mail at raysball@sunlitsurf.com or by telephone at the stadium at (304) 487-2000.
GETTING "THE BRONZE LOOK:" Fans who have purchased program/yearbooks over the second half of the season at Hunnicutt Field have noticed the new insert, "Rays Report," a front and back page newsletter which features a new edition with the beginning of each home series with updated statistics, player profiles, trivia, P-Rays' alumni report, road game summaries, and league standings along with other information. The P-Rays would like to offer a tip of the P-Ray cap and say "thank you" to one of Princeton's newest businesses, "The Bronze Look" and it's owner Randolph Evans, for sponsoring the newsletter and making it's production possible. Be sure on your next trip to Hunnicutt Field to obtain one of these newsletters and learn more about your team as well as the world of coin collecting and sales at "The Bronze Look." Also thank you to 2005 P-Ray intern Kevin Bryant (class of 2005-Morehead State University) for formulating this idea while continuing to gather and write the weekly information which you see in each newsletter's copy.
ONE SIX-GAME HOMESTAND TO GO: The Princeton Devil Rays will conclude the home portion of their 2005 Appalachian League schedule with a six-game homestand from Monday, August 22 to Saturday, August 27. As usual, the week will be loaded with promotions (which will be e-mailed to you later in the week). If you are starting to think about football, two promotions you won't want to miss are on Monday, August 22 and Friday, August 26. On Monday, it will be "Concord University Night" and all fans are asked to wear maroon to support the Mountain Lions. There will be drawings for 20 (yes, 20) free admission passes for all CU sporting events for the 2005-06 academic year. A special 4:00 p.m. start time is slated for Friday, August 26 as it will be "Battle of the Cats Day" at Hunnicutt Field to salute the renewal of the high school football rivalry between the Princeton Tigers and PikeView Panthers. The first 250 PSHS students as well as the first 250 PVHS students attending the P-Rays' August 26 game (gates open at 3:00 p.m.) will receive a FREE "Battle of the Cats" t-shirt (courtesy of Wendy's) to commemorate the football game, which will kick off at 7:30 p.m. also on August 26 next door at Hunnicutt Stadium. ALL PRINCETON HIGH SCHOOL AND PIKEVIEW HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WILL BE ADMITTED FREE TO THE P-RAYS' AUGUST 26 4:00 P.M. GAME. Once again, a complete list of our August 22-27 promos will be mailed to our "Raywatch" e-mail subscriber list later in the week.
We thank you for your continued support of professional baseball in Princeton, West Virginia and we look forward to seeing you at the ballpark on the week of August 22!!
