DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - For Daytona Beach Thunder owners Kevin McDonald, Zack McDonald and Antone Smothers, tying was better than winning when it came to the vote for American Indoor Football League Southern Conference owners of the year. The Thunder ownership shared the honor with Rome Renegades/Raleigh Rebels owner Harry Pierce when the AIFL announced its front office awards today. Daytona Beach's trio and Pierce each received three votes among the six Southern Conference owners and general managers participating.

"To be recognized alongside Harry, a businessman with class and integrity, is as great as honor as winning outright,'' said Zack McDonald. "We've enjoyed working with Harry in building this product to its fullest potential and are excited about working with him in the future, even though we were 0-4 against his teams this year."

The ownership honor was one of six front office awards garnered by the Thunder. In addition to the poll of owners and general managers, a committee of media members who cover indoor football judged the communications awards.

The most pleasing award for the Thunder was best web site, a fitting tribute to the late Bob Schmitt, the franchise's Director of Technology who tragically died in a motorcycle accident in June.

"Bob's efforts made the stuff that myself, photographer Don Bok and videographer Ryan Charlick produced look so much better on the internet,'' said Thunder Director of Communications Dan Ryan. "This one's for him"

Other Thunder awards include:

* Best Game Day presentation (tied with Florence) * Best Community Involvement for its delivery of materials to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina * Best Press Release (one of two selected) for "Thunder Signs Terry Bradshaw ... Really." * Best Radio Crew for the road team of Ryan, Calvin Thomas and David Kearse * Best Publication (one of two selected) for the dance team's swimsuit calendar.

Each franchise was allowed to select one member of its staff for the conference "Front Office Team." Daytona Beach's representative is Business Manager Terri McDonald.
