Dayton Silverbacks News Release
Miami Valley Silverbacks starting free safety Joey Owens picked up some accolades this morning from the Continental Indoor Football League.
Owens was named the CIFL's Defensive Player of the Week after recording 12 tackles, breaking up five passes and recording an interception in the Silverbacks' 35-29 win over the Fort Wayne Freedom Friday night at Hobart Arena.
"Joey is a really good player," head coach Carl Allen said. "He is a general on defense for us. "He is having a really good year and is deserving of the honor."
Owens becomes the second Silverback to earn Player of the Week honors. Quarterback Jim Oliver received Offensive Player of the Week honors in week two.
The win over the Freedom push the Silverbacks to 3-4, one half game behind Rock River and Fort Wayne for the final playoff spot in the Great Lakes Conference.
After enjoying a bye week this week, the Silverbacks close out the home portion of their schedule Friday, May 16 when they host division leading Kalamazoo at 7:30 p.m. at Hobart Arena. Tickets are still available at the Hobart Arena box office, or online at www.hobartarena.com.
