
Overtime win gives Ignition weekend sweep over Wave

(Southfield, Mich., January 14, 2007) - The Detroit Ignition (9-6) defeated the Milwaukee Wave (6-8), 17-14 in overtime at the U.S. Cellular Arena in Milwaukee, WI on Sunday. Detroit midfielder Novi Marojevic registered the game-winning, three-point goal at the 1:39 mark of overtime to give the Ignition its fourth consecutive win and second over the Wave. The victory completed the weekend sweep Detroit, as the first-year club registered a 14-6 win over Milwaukee on Friday, January 12 at Compuware Sports Arena in Plymouth, MI in the first half of the home-and-home series.
Wave forward Greg Howes struck first for Milwaukee with a two-point goal past Ignition goalkeeper Sanaldo at 11:24 of the opening frame of play to put Milwaukee in front 2-0. The Ignition responded quickly with a two-point goal from the League's leading scorer, Jamar Beasley, tying the contest 2-2 at 12:23. Detroit rookie Worteh Sampson buried a shot into the back of the net for a two-point goal at 12:45, giving the Ignition a 4-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter and the side's first lead of the afternoon.
Milwaukee midfielder Johnny Torres tied up the contest 4-4 at the 1:06 mark of the second quarter, beating Sanaldo on the near side for the two-point tally. Howes registered his second goal of the afternoon, also a two-pointer, at 5:45 to give Milwaukee a 6-4 advantage. Detroit's Miodrag Djerisilo beat Wave netminder Nick Vorberg for a two-point goal at 12:45, tying the game, 6-6, at the end of the first half.
Milwaukee rookie Marcio Leite blasted at two-point shot in high at 9:09 mark of the third quarter to put the Wave back in control at 8-6. Ignition forward Hewerton tied the contest 8-8 with a two-pointer against his former teammates at 12:16. Ignition forward Mike Apple scored a two-point tally at 12:53 which gave Detroit the 10-8 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
Wave offensive pressure led to another Leite two-point goal, his second of the game, at 2:09 of the fourth quarter to tie the contest at 10-10. Ignition midfielder Ryan Mack scored a two-point goal, his first of the season, off a pass from Jonathan Greenfield at 4:29 to put the first-year club back in control at 12-10. Sampson registered his second two-point goal of the afternoon at 12:30, extending the Detroit lead to 14-10. Wave forward Todd Dusosky responded with a two-point sixth-attacker goal at 12:56 to bring the Ignition lead down to just 14-12. Milwaukee struck again with another two-point, sixth-attacker goal from Dusosky at 13:34 to tie the contest at 14-14 at the end of regulation.
Ignition midfielder, and team captain, Novi Marojevic put in a three-point blast on the power play just 1:39 into overtime to give the visiting team the 17-14 victory and a sweep of the weekend's home-and-home series.
