Overtime Too Much Again and Again For Columbus

December 30, 2002 - NBA G League (G League)
Columbus Riverdragons News Release

COLUMBUS, Ga., (Dec. 30) – Apparently, three is not a charm in Columbus, Ga. The Mobile Revelers took off on a 7-0 run in the first 1:15 of overtime on their way to a 91-81 victory at the Columbus Civic Center -handing the Columbus Riverdragons their third straight overtime loss in as many nights.

The Riverdragons (7-11), who trailed by as many as 16 points in the third quarter, out-scored the Revelers 20-7 in the fourth quarter to force the extra session.

Nate Johnson scored seven of his 14 points in the final quarter, including a driving lay-up off a nice feed from Tyrone Washington to tie the game, 75-75, with :40.5 remaining. The score would remain deadlocked, 75-75, at the end of regulation.

The Revelers (8-9), perhaps taking advantage of a tired Columbus team, scored seven straight points to open overtime and went ahead, 82-75, on a 3-pointer by Shea Seals with 3:45 left in OT. Derek Hood scored five points in the extra period to pace the Revelers final charge. The Revelers out-scored Columbus 16-6 in overtime.

Mobile was led by Hood and Isaac Fontaine, who each scored 15 points on the evening. Power forward Eugene Edgerson notched his second straight double-double against Columbus, posting 11 points and 11 rebounds. Edgerson is currently ranked second in the league in rebounding behind the Riverdragons Tang Hamilton.

"I feel that the more I play the more efficient I can be," said Edgerson. "I can always be efficient playing 18 minutes like I did last year but Coach (Sam Vincent) is actually going to me this season - whereas last year he wouldn't run a play for me. This year he keeps going to me because he knows I'm going to take the ball to the basket."

Greg Stempin, in his first start of the season for Columbus, led all scorers with a season-high 20 points along with nine rebounds. Tang Hamilton added 13 points and nine boards as all five Riverdragons starters scored in double-figures.

Mobile is beginning to make Columbus a second home, winning four of five meetings this season with the Riverdragons, including three straight victories at the Columbus Civic Center. The Revelers overcame the Riverdragons 103-98 in overtime Saturday night in Mobile.

The Riverdragons also fell 106-104 in OT Sunday night to the Roanoke Dazzle. The Riverdragons are 0-4 in overtime this season and have dropped four straight overall for the fist time in team history.

Both the Revelers and Columbus will spend New Year's Day on the road. The Riverdragons make their first trip to Roanoke while Mobile heads to N. Charleston to face the Lowgators.
