Excellent Presents for Bobby and Mike

Published on December 30, 2002 under NBA G League (G League) News Release

Mike Wilks and Bobby Simmons must have been very good boys last year, because both found exactly what they had been looking for as they opened their Christmas stockings. By the time Christmas week was over, both had earned a call-up to the NBA. Wilks left Huntsville and joined the Atlanta Hawks in time to start his first game in a Hawks uniform Dec. 27 against San Antonio. Simmons rejoined the Washington Wizards in time to say hello to Wilks and his Hawks teammates at the MCI Center on Dec. 28.

Ushering Out the Old

The Fayetteville Patriots and Huntsville Flight will say so-long to 2002 by playing for first place in the calendar-year-ending standings Tuesday at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville. Tip off is 7:30 CT. By virtue of a three-game winning streak the Flight has returned to first place, one game ahead of the Patriots who have won four of the last five. The game will televised on a tape-delayed basis by ESPN2, airing Jan. 2 at 3 p.m. ET

Ringing in the New Year

College football? We don't need no stinkin' football. New Year's Day was made for the National Basketball Development League.

The North Charleston Lowgators and Roanoke Dazzle are offering the sports fan's antithesis to the New Year's Day football "hair of the dog". The remedy is served in round cowhide instead of the oval skin of the pig. The Lowgators host the Mobile Revelers and new point guard Rafer "Skip to my Lou" Alston, while Roanoke entertains a struggling Columbus Riverdragons team looking to snap a three-game losing streak. Both games tip off at 7 p.m. ET.

Everybody in the Poole

Kareem Poole, the Columbus Riverdragons leading rebounder last season, returned to haunt his former team Sunday night by converting a 22-foot jump shot as time expired and push the Roanoke Dazzle past Columbus in overtime, 106-104, at the Columbus Civic Center. The loss evened the Riverdragons and Dazzle in last place at 7-10.

Take Me Away, Just Not to Huntsville

The Fayetteville Patriots have enjoyed much more success on the road than at home this season. The Patriots, who play at Huntsville Tuesday, are 6-2 on the road and just 4-5 at the Cumberland Crown Center. Something has to give Tuesday, however. Huntsville has the league's best home record at 6-2.
