Outlaws Take 5-2 Win Over Maui; Lead GBL Championship Series 1-0

(Chico, CA. September 14th, 2010) Behind another sterling performance from the bullpen, the Chico Outlaws scored runs in four consecutive innings to win game one of the GBL Championship Series 5-2 over the Maui Na Koa Ikaika on Tuesday night at Nettleton Stadium.

Demetrius Banks started for the Outlaws and went five and a third solid innings before giving way to the bullpen, allowing just two runs (one earned) on three hits and striking out three.

Harold Williams (1-1) got the ball for Maui and took the loss, giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits with seven strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings pitched.

Maui got on the board first in the third frame on a Fehlandt Lentini sacrifice fly, making it 1-0.

The Na Koa Ikaika added a run in the fourth after Phil Avlas reached base on third baseman Santo DeLeon's throwing error and then promptly stole second base. One batter later, Outlaws shortstop Pascual Del Real's bad throw to first allowed Avlas to score an unearned run, giving Maui a 2-0 lead.

Chico got going in the bottom of the fourth inning when Einertson scored an unearned run on DeLeon's RBI groundout, cutting the Maui lead to 2-1.

A second unearned run scored for the Outlaws in the fifth inning on an error by Maui second baseman Gered Mochizuki, which allowed Mitch Einertson to score to tie the game at 2-2.

Loading up the bases in the sixth, the center fielder Blake Gailen walked to give the Outlaws their first lead of the night at 3-2. Maui's Kent Tsujimoto relieved Williams and struck out Bobby Hill to leave the bags full.

Two more runs came in the seventh inning on RBI base knocks from Mikael Jova and DeLeon, giving Chico a 5-2 lead.

Four Outlaws relievers combined for three and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief of Banks, with Josh Dew (1-0) picking up the win in relief. Yosandy Ibanez picked up his first save of the postseason by pitching a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out two.

The Outlaws now lead the best of five series one game to none.

Game two of the series is set for Wednesday night at Nettleton Stadium, with first pitch set for 7:05 pm.

The teams will travel to the Valley Isle on Thursday and then play game three of the series at Iron Maehara Stadium in Wailuku, Maui on Saturday night. Games four and five, if necessary, would be played Sunday and Monday.

OUTLAWS NOTES: Game time temperature was 79 degrees....the two teams combined for six errors; 4 by Maui and 2 by Chico...the Outlaws have won five games in a row dating back to the regular season finale on Sep 2nd against Calgary.
