CHICO- Put on your ballcaps, break in the glove, and get ready; the Chico Outlaws are playing baseball! A beautiful sunny day at Butte College marked the location of the start of Spring Training for the Outlaws. Just one day after many of the players arrived, they took the field hoping to earn a spot on the roster.
The day began with stretching, and quickly moved into on-field drills. The outfielders were first to showcase their defensive abilities, shagging fly balls and launching them back to the infield. The infielders followed suit, showing off their gloves and fielding some sharply hit grounders by the new skipper, Mike Marshall. The days events culminated in an eight inning inter-squad scrimmage.
The game was an opportunity for half the squad's pitchers to showcase their talents on the mound. Marc Kaiser was the first to impress the coaches. The 29 year old righty out of Reno, NV came on in relief to pitch two solid innings. At the plate, two former Outlaws, Bobby Hill and Derek Hale, started off the season with a bang. In Hill's first at bat, he forced the right fielder sprinting back to the warning track, missing what would have been the first homerun of the young season. Hill redeemed himself in his next at bat, launching a fastball off the wall in left-center for a 2-run double. Hale, a year removed from his time as an Outlaw, went 2-2 on the day knocking in a few runs of his own.
The day featured nine pitchers looking to find their name on the roster May 26, when the team opens on the road in Yuma. The rest of the pitchers will take the mound tomorrow. Along with the pitchers trying to make a name for themselves, Saturday's open tryouts will feature approximately twenty bright eyed newcomers looking to land a spot on an already competitive roster. Tomorrow's tryouts begin at 8 AM and will be held at Butte College.
