Williamsport Outlaws News Release
Wayne, N.J. - On Monday, August 22nd at the Capital One Ice Vault in Wayne New Jersey, New Jersey Outlaws' Team President Chris Firriolo announced the signing of former Southern Professional Hockey League standout defenseman Billy McCreary.
McCreary, a Southhampton, Ontario native, joins former teammates Travis Kauffedlt, the SPHL Player of the Year in 2008-2009, and goaltender Dan McWhinney, the SPHL 2009-2010 Playoff MVP, here in New Jersey for the upcoming 2011-2012 season.
The 5'10 180lb veteran defenseman began his professional career in Huntsville in 2006-2007 and over the next five seasons played in 209 career games recording 130 points and amassed 556 penalty minutes. McCreary currently ranks 2nd in Huntsville history in games played (209), 3rd in assists (109), 3rd in points (130) and 3rd in penalty minutes (556).
In 2009-2010, McCreary captured the SPHL President's Cup Championship in Huntsville along side teammates Travis Kauffeldt and Dan McWhinney.
"Billy brings a tremendous amount of leadership and experience to our organization," said Outlaws' Team President Chris Firriolo. "On the ice he will be the backbone of our defensive core, off the ice his experience and leadership over the last 5 seasons will play a vital role in helping our organization achieve our goals within our community. He's a proven winner as we've seen over the course of his tenure down in Huntsville and his desire to win a championship resonates with the core of players we have coming in. When ever you have a group of guys who know what it takes to win like McCreary, Kauffeldt and McWhinney, it gives you a chance each day to be successful both on and off the ice as an organization."
Prior to arriving to the SPHL, McCreary had an outstanding junior career spending two seasons in the NAHL with the Texas Tornado where in 98 games he scored 45 goals, added 71 assists for 116 points and 292 penalty minutes. McCreary went on to play 3 years at Providence College in the Hockey East where he played in 73 games, scoring 13 goals and 14 assists. In addition to his 5 seasons in Huntsville, McCreary spent time in the CHL with both the New Mexico Scorpions and the Texas Brahmas. Huntsville recognized McCreary's leadership and 5 years of service to the organization by naming him as their Player/Assistant Coach last season.
McCreary comes from a long rich history of professional hockey as his grandfather, Bill McCreary, played for many years in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings, the St. Louis Blues, the New York Rangers and the Montreal Canadians. His grandfather was also a player coach for the St. Louis Blues and later a General Manager of the Vancouver Canucks. McCreary's father, Bill McCreary, played 12 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 80-81 and never played another shift after his infamous hit on Wayne Gretzky, which happened to be McCreary's favorite player. His father then played another 6 or 7 years in the CHL, IHL and AHL. All the McCreary's are very hard workers and had great pro careers. McCreary's grandfather also had a brother, his late uncle Keith McCreary who played 14 years in the NHL with a number of teams including the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Base Hockey, who McCreary works with, out of Vancouver, BC, a manufacturer of professional hockey sticks, will be a supplier of the New Jersey Outlaws this coming season.
