Chico Outlaws News Release

RENO, NV - The Chico Outlaws mounted a furious late-inning rally, scoring once in the 8th inning and three times in the 9th, but it wasn't enough to overtake the Reno Silver Sox, who hung on for a 6-5 victory in the rubber match of a season-opening three game series at Peccole Park on the University of Nevada, Reno campus.

The game began as a pitcher's duel as Chico's Derrick Loop and Keaton Everitt of Reno traded zeroes through the first four-and-a-half innings. The Silver Sox finally got on the board in the bottom of the 5th - Carlos Madrid's two-run double and a two out RBI single by J.J. Johnson put Reno out in front 3-0. The Outlaws cut the Silver Sox lead to two in the top of the 6th inning when Scott Dragicevich doubled home Jason Matteucci...but in the bottom of the 6th Reno went up 5-1 on a Jose Rodriguez solo homer off Chico reliever John Segovia and an unearned run courtesy of a two out error by Outlaws third baseman Jesse Oster. In the 7th a throwing error by Chico shortstop Jesse Kovacs led to another unearned run and a 6-1 Silver Sox lead.

Reno appeared to have the contest well in hand, but the Outlaws were given a gift run in the 8th inning when Silver Sox reliever Adam Nikolic surrendered a single and three walks...Kovacs earning an easy RBI when he received a bases loaded free pass. In the 9th Reno reliever Jason Martinez got the first two outs but then walked Steve Boggs...Silver Sox manager Les Lancaster brought in his closer Marshall Plouffe, who promptly gave up an RBI double off the bat of Dragicevich. Three pitches later Daniel Nava clubbed a towering home run to right (his first professional round-tripper) and suddenly the Outlaws were within a run. But Plouffe regrouped and struck out Jake McLintock on three pitches to end the game and give Reno the win.

Everitt (1-0) allowed just one run in seven innings of work to pick up the win for the Silver Sox...Loop (0-1) took the loss for the Outlaws. Chico had nine hits on the night, with Dragicevich going 3-for-5; Eric Pringle chipped in with a pair of singles and Nava collected two hits and reached base five times...Madrid and Rodriguez each had two hits to lead Reno's 10-hit attack. With the loss, the Outlaws fell to 1-2 on the young season while the Silver Sox improved to 2-1. The two teams meet again Sunday, but this time in Chico for the Outlaws home season opener...the Outlaws will send right-hander Phil Springman to the mound in the opener of a four game series at Nettleton Stadium; the Silver Sox will counter with right-hander James Johnson. Game time is 6:05; hear all the action live with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN radio beginning with the Outlaws pre-game show at 5:35pm.
