Chico Outlaws News Release
LONG BEACH, CA - It took over 25 innings, but the Chico Outlaws offense finally showed signs of life in their four-game series with Long Beach, but the Armada held off a pair of late-inning rallies to edge the Outlaws 4-3 Wednesday night at Blair Field...Chico dropping its third in a row on their current road trip and sixth straight overall.
Long Beach has just five hits on the night, but made the most of their opportunities - in the 2nd inning Norm Hutchins led off the inning with a walk, stole second and scored on a Brett Flowers double to right. The Armada went up 2-0 in the 3rd when Michael Glomb reached on a base hit, went to third on a hit-and-run single by Omar Bramasco and came home on a Steve Moss sacrifice fly. In the 4th Ryan Brown singled, was wild pitched to second by Chico starter Eric Sheridan, advanced to third when Hutchins reached on a wild pitch third strike and scored when Hutchins was caught in a rundown between first and second...then in the 5th Long Beach made it 4-0 when Octavio Martinez doubled and eventually scored from third on a sac fly by Bramasco.
The Outlaws got on the board in the 6th when Steve Boggs walked and scored on a Todd Gossage triple...but Armada starting pitcher Rik Currier kept the damage to a minimum, stranding Gossage at third by striking out Julian Benavidez and Bryan Silverman and getting Jesse Kovacs to fly out to end the inning. Chico made it a 4-2 ballgame in the 8th when Kovacs delivered a two-out single to plate Gossage...but the Outlaws stranded a pair when Chris Corso flied out to right. In the 9th Long Beach closer Nick Cavanaugh was brought in to get the final three outs, but Chico had other ideas - singles by Matt Ceriani, Dan Luyben and Boggs cut the Armada lead to one...but with bases loaded and two outs, Cavanaugh got Silverman to fly out to right to end the Outlaws comeback and give the Armada the hard-fought 4-3 victory.
Currier (7-5) allowed just one run on six hits in seven innings of work to earn the win, with Cavanaugh posting his 13th save of the season...Sheridan (3-3 with the Outlaws, 4-5 overall) struck out a season high eight in five-and-two-thirds innings but took the loss. Chico had 12 hits on the night, with Gossage finishing 3-for-5 while Ceriani and Luyben had two hits apiece, but it wasn't enough to keep the Outlaws from dropping to 13-22 in the second half and 28-49 for the year; Long Beach improved to 19-15 in the second half and 41-37 on the season. Chico tries to avoid the series sweep Thursday, sending left-hander Scott Navarro (2-4) to the mound; the Armada will counter with former major leaguer Seth Etherton (0-0). Game time is 7:05pm... hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
