North Iowa Outlaws News Release

(Mason City, IA) The North Iowa Outlaws Junior "A" Hockey team played in its first-ever shootout in club history Saturday night. After the Outlaws and Fargo-Moorhead failed to settle the outcome in regulation play and a five-minute sudden-death overtime, 12 shooters from each side were needed in the lengthy shootout. The Jets won the shootout, and prevailed over the Outlaws, 3-2 at North Iowa Ice Arena.

The first two periods featured scored single goals for each team and were spiced up with a number of penalties and a few fights. The Outlaws struck first on the power play in the opening canto. David Kirsch (Superior, CO) found the back of the net at 3:28, with assists credited to Patrick Dynan (Maple Plain, MN) and Cody Mosbeck (Emo, Ontario, Canada). The Jets' Kai Kantola tied the game roughly four minutes later, then Joe Schuster netted his team-leading 13th goal early in the second period. Fargo-Moorhead's 2-1 lead disappeared late in the second period. Dynan converted a Jets turnover into a scoring opportunity. His shot at the net was slowed by goalie B.J. O'Brien, but after a long discussion involving the goal judge, it was determined the Dynan's shot crossed the goal line, to tie the game. The game settled down in the third period and overtime, but neither team scored, to create the shootout. In a normal shootout, up to five shooters would be needed. But after five rounds, the shootout was all even, at one score apiece, with Matt Moreland scoring for the Jets, and Mike Sand (Jeddo, MI) later countering for North Iowa. Both O'Brien and the Outlaws' Erik Largen (Fairbanks, AK) shined in goal during the shootout. The Jets 12th shooter, Kyle Graalum, sent his shot into the net, to give his team the advantage. The shootout came to an end, when Kirsch was denied by O'Brien, on his shot.

By getting one point in the team standings, the Outlaws now have earned 22 points in 23 games. With Southern Minnesota defeating Alexandria Saturday night, the Express and Outlaws now share third place, in the NAHL Central Division. Fargo-Moorhead, meanwhile, vaulted over Alexandria, and back into first place in the division.

The Outlaws now have a 13-day break before getting back into action. North Iowa will return to the ice Friday, November 25th at 7:45 PM, hosting Southern Minnesota at the North Iowa Ice Arena.
