Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - The Chico Outlaws are kings of the Golden Baseball League - Nick Singleton tossed seven solid innings and Eric Pringle drove in four runs as the Outlaws capped off the most successful season in team history, downing the Long Beach Armada 6-1 Saturday night at Blair Field in Long Beach to win the best-of-five Golden Baseball League Championship series three games to one.
The Armada, trying to win for the second straight night and force a fifth and deciding game for the league crown, grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 3rd when Singleton walked Kirk Gross and surrendered back-to-back singles by David Ramirez and Jorge Araiza. John Kaplan was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out...but Singleton was able to prevent any further damage by retiring the next three batters to end the inning. The Outlaws answered back in the top of the 4th, scoring a pair of runs off Long Beach starter Jeff Heaverlo - Pringle's bases- loaded single to right plating Craig Kuzmic and Jason Van Meetren put Chico out in front 2-1...then in the 5th Scott Dragicevich doubled and came home on a Kuzmic base hit to extend the Outlaws lead to 3-1.
Now trailing, Long Beach failed to mount any type of scoring threat against Singleton...at one point Nick retired 11 straight Armada batters. In the 7th the Outlaws effectively put the game away, as Jason Van Meetren singled home Daniel Nava to knock Heaverlo out of the game...then later in the inning Pringle delivered a two-out double off Long Beach reliever Sean Buller to plate Van Meetren and Jason Matteucci and push Chico's lead to 6-1. That would turn out to be more than enough offense for Singleton, who combined with reliever Jesse Oster to get the final nine outs for the victory and clinch the Outlaws first-ever GBL crown.
Singleton (1-0) allowed just four hits through seven-plus innings to pick up the win (his first since July 4th)...Heaverlo (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing seven hits and walking eight batters. The Outlaws collected 10 hits on the night, with Pringle, Kuzmic and Dragicevich picking up two safeties apiece...after the game Dragicevich was named the Championship Series Most Valuable Player. Chico finishes their championship season with an overall 47-33 record.
