Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CALIF – There will be no shortage of pitching when the Chico Outlaws open spring training on May 9. Tuesday the Outlaws added two more hurlers to their inaugural season staff, bringing righthanders Chad Bowen and Rodrigo Miralles to Chico for the 2005 campaign. The Outlaws have now signed or acquired the rights to 12 pitchers, with more "mound moves" expected in the coming weeks.

"You can never have too much pitching, and both Chad and Rodrigo fit well into our plans," Outlaws General Manager Bob Linscheid said Tuesday. "I expect the battle for spots on the Outlaws staff to be extremely competitive this spring. We feel that we have so many quality pitchers that the ones we have to eventually let go will be gobbled up by the other teams in the Golden Baseball League."

Chico sent infielders Willie King and Elliott Ayala – two players the Outlaws acquired in the GBL's supplemental draft – to the Bangor Lumberjacks of the independent Can-Am League to obtain Bowen, a former New York Mets farmhand. The 22-year-old was the Mets' 8th round pick in the 2000 amateur draft, but following a solid rookie season (7-2 record, 3.00 earned run average at rookie league Kingsport), Chad developed arm problems that limited him to just three appearances in 2001. Following shoulder surgery, Bowen threw sparingly in relief in 2002 and 2003, then missed the entire 2004 season when he suffered a hamstring injury during extended spring training with the Mets. Chad is now injury-free and could figure to be a valuable acquisition for the Outlaws.

The Outlaws obtained Miralles from the independent Frontier League's Ohio Valley Redcoats for future considerations. Rodrigo enters his third year of pro ball – in 16 appearances last season for the Springfield/Ozark Mountain Ducks (Frontier League), Miralles posted a 6-3 record and a 3.17 ERA, striking out 60 batters in just over 59 innings of work. Prior to turning pro, Rodrigo starred at Houston (TX) Baptist College – in 2002, he was named the Red River Athletic Conference's Pitcher of the Year.
