Chico Outlaws News Release
(Wailuki, Maui, Hawaii. September 18th, 2010) The Chico Outlaws completed a three-game sweep of the expansion Maui Na Koa Ikaika and claimed their second-ever GBL Championship with a 7-1 win at Iron Maehara Stadium in Maui on Saturday night.
With 13 hits in the game and another night of outstanding pitching, the Outlaws got big innings in the third and eighth frames to put the Na Koa Ikaika away and make a winner of Mark McLemore (2-0) as Chico finished its post-season run with a 6-0 record after sweeping Calgary in the GBL North Division first-round playoff series.
McLemore went six and a third innings and allowed just one run on six hits and struck out three.
Wes Etheridge (1-2) got the ball for Maui and looked shaky early, surrendering a run to the Outlaws in the first inning on JJ Sherrill's RBI single. Etheridge finished the night after allowing 12 hits and five earned runs over seven innings, striking out five.
Chico plated three more runs in the third inning on four hits, including RBI base hits from Mikael Jova and Mark Samuelson, putting the Outlaws ahead 4-0.
Na Koa Ikaika got their lone run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Left fielder Travon Jackson led off with a single and advanced to third on Paul Nishimura's double. Etheridge then grounded out to second base, scoring Jackson to cut the lead to 4-1.
Blake Gailen's double off the left field wall in the fifth added another tally when Anthony Manuel scored after leading off the inning with a single, reestablishing the Outlaws lead of four runs at 5-1.
A two-run blast off Gailen's bat in the eighth inning put the nail in the coffin in the 7-1 final score. The homerun was Gailen's first of the post-season.
Josh Dew and Justin Segal pitched two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief as the bullpen came through one more time in the series. In nine innings of relief during the three-game series, the bullpen never surrendered a run.
