Ottawa Renegades News Release
OTTAWA â Thursday, April 18, 2002 â The Ottawa Renegades have announced today that they have bolstered their offense by acquiring non-Import wide receiver Ben Wearing.
Wearing, 25, who spent his rookie season in the Canadian Football League with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, comes to the Nation's Capital in a trade for a conditional draft pick in 2003. The 5'11", 199-pounder, was selected in the third round (19th overall) of the Canadian College Draft on April 26, 2001 from McGill University. He had transferred from Brown University, where he spent two seasons with the Bears. Wearing, who led the Redmen and the Ontario-Quebec Intercollegiate Football Conference with 1,442 all-purpose yards in 2000, was both a first-team O-QIFC All-Star as well as an All-Canadian that season. He not only led the conference with 1,199 all-purpose yards in 1999, but also ended his Canadian college career with sixteen consecutive games of at least 100 all-purpose yards.
"In Ben, we feel that we have acquired a quality young receiver," explained general manager Eric Tillman. "He is still in the developmental stages, but if all goes well, he should fit in nicely with our youth movement."
This year's Canadian College Draft will be held this Thursday, April 25, with the Renegades holding five of the first thirteen selections.
Professional football returns to the nation's capital this spring as the Ottawa Renegades open up their inaugural training camp on June 1st. The regular season kicks off on June 28 against the visiting Saskatchewan Roughriders at Frank Clair Stadium.
