GREAT FALLS, MONT. - In the prior eight playoff games between the Missoula Osprey and Great Falls Voyagers, the teams had alternated wins and losses, The Osprey won the North Division Playoff series against the Voyagers in three games in 2009, and lost the Best-of-3 series in three games one season ago.
So in Sunday's decider in the 2012 Pioneer Baseball League North Division Series here at Centene Stadium, the pattern that had developed continued, as the Osprey hung on for a 4-2 win and advanced to the Pioneer League Championship Series against the Ogden Raptors.
Yoimer Camacho and three relievers combined on a four-hitter, with three walks and nine strikeouts between Camacho (who walked three), Jared Ray, Vince Spilker and Justin Thompson, who pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
The Osprey scored first, stringing together three consecutive hits with one out in the top of the fourth inning off of Voyagers starter JC Casey. Socrates Brito singled and scored on Alex Glenn's RBI double to left-center field. Breland Almadova singled inside the third-base bag to plate Glenn and give the Osprey a 2-0 lead. Glenn finished 2-for-3 at the plate for the Osprey.
The Voyagers would answer in the home half of the fourth inning off of Osprey starter Yoimer Camacho, as Thomas McCarthy doubled and would score on an Angel Rosario groundout. Danny Pulfer - who had four hits to pace the 11-hit Osprey output at the plate - would single home Andrew Velazquez, who led off the fifth with a triple, to extend the Osprey lead to 3-1.
McCarthy would hit a solo home run off of Missoula reliever Jared Ray to get Great Falls within 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth, but the Osprey pushed across a run in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Velazquez to add an insurance run and account for the final score.
The Osprey will open the Pioneer League Championship Series against the Raptors on Tuesday at Ogren Park Allegiance Field. Games 2 and 3 (if necessary) will be in Ogden.
Tickets for Game 1 of the Championship Series will be available on Monday at 9 a.m. at the MSO Hub Box Office, located at 140 North Higgins in Downtown Missoula or by phone at (406) 543-3300.
