Missoula PaddleHeads News Release

MISSOULA, MT - The Missoula Osprey's drive for a playoff berth received a temporary road block courtesy of the Great Falls Voyagers on Friday at Ogren Park Allegiance Field.

The Voyagers scored six runs in the top of the second inning and cruised to a 9-0 win over the Osprey in front of 2,551 fans.

Great Falls would score six times in the top of the second inning, buoyed by a single by Jose Vargas, a hit batsman in the form of Johny Celis and an error by Osprey shortstop Chris Owings on a soft liner by Kyle Colligan to load the bases. After Osprey starter Charles Brewer (7-2) struck out Jordan Cheatham, Zach Larson plated Vargas with a sacrifice fly to get the Voyagers on the board.

Following a walk to Zach Kayne to reload the bases, Jeff Tezak singled home a pair of runs, Kayne scored on a wild pitch, and Jesus Avila hit a two-run home run, pushing the Great Falls edge to 6-0. The Voyagers would add a run in each of their final three at-bats to account for the final score.

The Osprey would have no answer, being held to six hits on the evening. Keon Broxton had two of them, including his ninth triple of the season, which tied the Osprey team record. Victor Hall set the standard with nine three-baggers back in 2000. Chris Owings also had a pair of hits for Missoula.

Even with the loss, the Osprey still pulled closer to making the 2009 Pioneer League Playoffs, as one team was eliminated, with the other put on the brink of elimination. In a doubleheader at Dehler Park in Billings, the Mustangs scored five runs in their final at-bat to beat the Helena Brewers, 8-4. The nightcap was tied at 5-5 heading into the 10th inning at last report, with the loser of the nightcap being eliminated.

The Osprey will wrap up their two-game series with the Voyagers on Saturday at Ogren Park Allegiance Field. Chase Anderson (3-0, 2.70 ERA) will get the start for the Osprey, while Jarrett Coker (2-1, 8.49) will make the start for the Voyagers.

Tickets for any remaining Osprey home game this season can be obtained by calling the Osprey at (406) 543-3300, stopping by the Osprey Team Store at 412 W. Alder, or ordering online at www.missoulaosprey.com.
