Missoula PaddleHeads News Release
HELENA, MT - The Missoula Osprey and Helena Brewers settled into a nifty pitching duel on Wednesday at Kindrick Legion Field, and in the end, the Brewers managed to get the final hit.
Cameron Garfield drilled a two-out, two-run double off of reliever Adam Worthington in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Brewers a 2-1, walk-off win over the Osprey.
With the loss, the Osprey fall out of first place in the Pioneer League's North Division and now is ½ game behind Great Falls in the second-half standings. The Voyagers beat Billings, 10-5, on Wednesday to jump back into first.
Neither team could dent the scoreboard in the first seven innings, but the Osprey broke the scoreless tie in the top of the eighth inning. With one out, Chris Owings bunted to third for a base hit, Paul Goldschmidt singled to center, and Keon Broxton singled to right to plate Owings to put the Osprey in front, 1-0.
The Osprey had more chances to score, but could not take advantage of the opportunities. Missoula had nine hits in the game - three from David Nick - but also stranded 10 runners on base, and went a collective 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
Osprey starter Mike Belfiore retired the first 14 batters he faced before allowing a two-out double to Shawn Zarraga in the bottom of the fifth inning. That would be the only hit he would allow in six innings, walking one and striking out eight batters. Belfiore posted his fourth scoreless outing as a starter, and has not allowed an earned run in his last 21 innings of work.
Worthington (4-4) took over in the seventh, and it looked as if he would be able to close things out, but the Brewers managed to get a one-out single and take advantage of an error to get two runners on base. Garfield then took a 2-2 pitch and hit it deep to right-center field to help Helena steal the win.
The Osprey and Brewers will wrap up their three-game series on Thursday at Kindrick Legion Field. Right-hander Miguel Pena gets the start for the Osprey, while Jake Odorizzi gets the call for the Brewers.
The Osprey will play their final six games at home in their final homestand, which will begin this Friday, September 4. Tickets for any remaining Osprey home game this season can be obtained by calling the Osprey at (406) 543-3300, stopping by the Osprey Team Store at 412 W.
