Orlik and Perianu defeat Dokei and Inoue in doubles championship

Young girls and women filled Dwight Davis Tennis Center Saturday as the Dwight Davis Merrill Lynch Championships hosted the GoGirlGo! Tennis Day, the singles semifinals and doubles championship.

The morning started with more than 200 local girls in pink shirts taking over the complex for a free tennis clinic taught by local pros and women from the USTA Pro Circuit. Each girl received a free t-shirt and tennis racquet. The event was sponsored by the St. Louis Sports Commission and the St. Louis Aces.

On stadium court, the singles semifinals provided surprising results as Lindsey Hardenberg, the qualifier from the University of Virginia, defeated Noel Scott to advance to Sunday's final match. Hardenberg worked hard for her places in the championship, defeating the No. 1 and No.8- ranked players of the tournament. Hardenberg will face off against No. 3 Anda Perianu in in Sunday's championship. Perianu defeated No. 2 Ashley Weinhold in three sets 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(5).

After her victory in the singles semifinals, Perianu took a short break and was back on the court with doubles partner Anna Orlik for the doubles championship. Perianu and Orlik triumphed over the No. 2 team Tomoko Dokei and Mami Inoue, 6-2, 6-1.

The Dwight Davis Merrill Lynch Championships will wrap up Sunday at Dwight Davis Memorial Tennis Center in Forest Park with the singles championship. Gates will open at 9 a.m. with play beginning at 10:00 a.m. An awards ceremony sponsored by Lindell Bank and Trust will be held immediately following the championship match.

Day passes are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 13. Tickets may be purchased at the gate. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to 501 (3)(c)Dwight Davis Memorial Tennis Center.
