Orlando Predators McEntyre named Al Lucas Hero Award winner
June 7, 2006 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release
LAS VEGAS - Orlando Predators defensive specialist KENNY McENTYRE (5-11, 185, Kansas State) was selected as the Al Lucas Hero Award winner for 2006. Keeping in the spirit of fallen AFL veteran AL LUCAS, McEntyre was chosen as the player who made the most significant contribution to both his community and the game of Arena Football. The award was created in honor of the late Los Angeles Avengers lineman Al Lucas, who believed in both giving back to his community and growing the AFL.
After the devastation left behind in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in August of 2005, McEntyre organized a golf tournament to raise funds for victims in October of 2005. The efforts in the "Golf for the Gulf Tournament" raised nearly $10,000 for hurricane relief efforts.
McEntyre has also focused his philanthropic work towards underprivileged children. He started a school supply collection for underprivileged kids in the inner city and at Christmas time with the help of his wife, Sharisse, he has started a toy drive for children in need.
Not just has McEntyre given back to the community in donations and fundraising events, he was also a member of the AFL Army Boot Camp. In the Boot Camp, he paid visits to Orlando area high schools to teach the importance of education, teamwork and physical fitness.
McEntyre, now in his ninth AFL season, has been named the ADT Defensive Player of the Year an unprecedented three times (2000, 2001 and 2004). Nicknamed "The Glove" for his defensive prowess, McEntyre was also named to the first team All-Arena six times, 2000-2005. The Kansas State graduate holds the all-time League record for interception returns for a touchdown with 12.
McEntyre will be making his fourth appearance in the League's title match as he will take the field with the National Conference Champion Orlando Predators this Sunday in ArenaBowl XX against the American Conference Champion Chicago Rush (Thomas & Mack Center, 3 p.m. EST) live on NBC.
