THE STAKES: PREDATORS LOOK FOR FIFTH WIN OF SEASON AGAINST DEFENDING LEAGUE CHAMPS
While on a paper, a 4-1 team playing at home against a 1-3 team may appear as a mismatch, Orlando Predators head coach Jay Gruden says his team will have to play its best game of the year in order to defeat the defending AFL champion San Jose SaberCats on Sunday at Hummer Field.
"Make no mistake about it, San Jose remains one of the best and most dangerous teams in the Arena Football League," Gruden says. "The bottom line is that injuries, a tough schedule and having to play four of their first five games on the road has hurt San Jose. They are an extremely good team, especially on offense and we better come to play."
The SaberCats have lost their last two games by a total of three points, falling to league power New Orleans (61-62) and surprising Los Angeles (69-71) on the road. They are coming off a bye-week, giving them an extra week to prepare for the Predators and feature one of the best offenses in the league (57.2 points per game). The Cats are led by quarterback Mark Grieb (66.7% passing, 1,324 yards, 23 touchdowns) and star receiver James Roe (34-460-12 TD). The winningest AFL team this decade, the SaberCats lead the all-time series with the Predators 4-2-0.

QUOTE/UNQUOTE
"We need to avoid getting into a track meet-type game with these guys. We need to challenge them on every possession and make them work for every score. They are tough on offense and we need to try to get them in a low-scoring game."
DS Kenny McEntyre
THE COACHES
PREDS HEAD COACH JAY GRUDEN
JAY GRUDEN is in his second stint and begins his 6th year overall as Head Coach and Director of Football Operations for the Orlando Predators. After a Hall of Fame career as a quarterback for the Tampa Bay Storm, Gruden began his coaching career in 1997 by serving as offensive assistant for the Nashville Kats. One season later, the Predators made him the youngest head coach in the AFL. Gruden would go on to lead the Predators to three consecutive appearances in the ArenaBowl and a pair of championships. After guiding the Predators to a fourth consecutive trip to the playoffs in 2001, Gruden announced his intentions to resign in order to return to the playing field after a five-year layoff. In two seasons as Predators quarterback, Gruden directed Orlando to back-to-back appearances in the semifinals, falling one game short of his goal of returning to the ArenaBowl as a player. In 2003, he recorded a 10-0 mark with 49 touchdown passes and two interceptions as a starting quarterback. Off-season surgery, combined with the tragic loss of former Head Coach Fran Papasedero in a June 19, 2003 traffic accident, resulted in Gruden returning to the sideline. Gruden will take a 57-31 (.648) all-time coaching record into the Dallas game. He is 49-28 in regular season games (.636) and a solid 8-3 as a head coach in playoff games (.727).

SAN JOSE HEAD COACH DARREN ARBET
Coming off an ArenaBowl championship season and another year of double-digit victories, two-time Coach of the Year Darren Arbet is in his 7th season seven as head coach of the SaberCats. The success San Jose has enjoyed during his tenure has vaulted the franchise to elite status in the AFL. Arbet enters the Orlando game with a 74-30 record. His overall winning percentage is tops among coaches who have been involved in at least 25 games. Arbet also has the highest playoff winning percentage of any AFL coach (.750) and ranks fourth in playoff wins with nine. Last year's ArenaBowl victory at Arizona was the 100th game of Arbet's AFL career. Under the direction of Arbet the SaberCats have claimed two league titles (2002, 2004), four Western Division titles (2000-03) and set league records for regular season wins in a season (13 in 2002), overall wins in a season (16 in 2002), consecutive regular season wins in a season (12 in 2002), regular season wins to end a season (11 in 2000) and the longest regular season win streak (15 in 2000-01). Along with his duties as head coach, Arbet will also continue as the team's director of player personnel, a position he has held the past nine seasons. In that capacity he works with negotiating player contracts and has a decision in all personnel moves.
Gruden 4-0 Against Top 10 Coaches This Season: For the fifth time this season, Orlando Predators Head Coach Jay Gruden (ranked ninth in career wins) finds himself facing a coach ranked in the top 10 in career coaching wins. Previously this year, Gruden has gone 4-0 in these match-ups, defeating #1 Tim Marcum (Tampa Bay 61-46), #10 Todd Shell (d. Arizona, 51-40), #6 Mike Dailey (d. Colorado 39-36), and #3 Mike Hohensee (d. Chicago, 48-35). Before season's end, Gruden and the Predators will also face top 10 coaches #5 Mike Trigg (Philadelphia) and #1 Tim Marcum for a second time (Tampa Bay)).

Arbet vs. Gruden
The two coaches have faced each other just once, with the Predators and Gruden taking a 59-35 win on May 26, 2001. Arbet recorded a pair of wins against the Predators when Gruden was the Predators quarterback in 2002, winning 79-45 in the regular season and 52-40 in the semifinals of the playoffs that season.
SERIES HISTORY AND NOTES:
Although San Jose joined the league in 1995, this is just the fifth regular season meeting and seventh game overall between the two teams...San Jose leads the regular season series 3-1, with the teams splitting a pair of playoff contests...San Jose beat Orlando 52-40 in the 2002 playoffs to secure a spot in the ArenaBowl, where they claimed their first AFL title a week later against Arizona...both teams have won two AFL championships...At the time, San Jose's 34-point win in 2002 (79-45) became the worst beating ever laid on the Orlando Predators (record was since broken with 43-point loss to Chicago last year), and remains the most points ever scored on an Orlando Predators team at home...From 1991-99, San Jose WR/LB Barry Wagner won six consecutive "Ironman of the Year" awards as a member of the Orlando Predators (won awards 1992-97)...Wagner lives in Orlando in the off-season and is a graduate assistant football coach with Bethune-Cookman College...five of the six games in this series have been played in San Jose...none of the games have been close, as the smallest margin of victory in the series has been 12 points (San Jose 52, Orlando 40 in 2002 playoffs) and the average margin of victory in the series has been 22 points.

PREDS NEWS, NOTES, QUOTES, AND TRENDS
LAST WEEK'S GAME: THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY: Reviewing last week's win over Chicago... THE GOOD: The Predators showed great poise in coming from behind...Orlando may have found a new star in rookie offensive specialist Jimmy Fryzel, who caught nine passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns in his AFL debut...Orlando dominated the third quarter, using a 21-0 run to turn a 21-17 halftime deficit to a 38-21 lead...With the Predators leading 38-28, Damon Mason came up with a game-clinching interception after Chicago had intercepted a ball just one play earlier and was trying to grab back momentum...The Predators picked up their second road win in three attempts and their fourth win in five games against teams that had qualified for the playoffs a season earlier...Orlando won special teams play for first time this season, recovering an on-sides kick and a fumble on a kickoff and Brian Gowins hit all six extra points and two of three field goals in the win. THE BAD: Orlando gave up four plays of 20+ yards, including a 30-yard touchdown pass in the waning moments of the first half...the Predators also failed to stop the Rush on a 4th 10 play and a 2nd and 20 play. THE UGLY: After averaging only four penalties a game through three weeks of the season, the Predators were whistled for double digit penalties for a second straight week, collecting 12 penalties for a season-high 86 yards.
PREDATORS STILL ON REGULAR SEASON HOT STREAK: Counting Chicago win, the Predators have still won 11 of their last 13 regular season games, the best record in the Arena Football League over that time period.
McENTYRE IS TRUE IRONMAN
Kenny "The Glove" McEntyre has been one of the toughest competitors to ever wear a Predators uniform. Despite numerous injuries in his career, McEntyre has yet to miss a start since coming to the Predators in the tail end of the 1998 season. Heading into this week's game with San Jose, McEntyre has now answered the bell for 110 consecutive games -- building on his own team record.
FLEMING STEAK REMAINS ALIVE
Because he is on the injured reserve list and did not play last week, Cory Fleming's streak of at least one touchdown in 30 consecutive games played will remain alive. Including playoff games, Fleming has at least one touchdown catch in 38 of 40 career games with the Preds. He is eligible to come off the injured reserve list next week at New Orleans.
WHEN PREDATORS LEAD AT HALFTIME GOOD THINGS HAPPEN
When Orlando takes a lead into the locker room at halftime, the Predators usually hold it. The Predators hold an all-time record of 105 wins against just 22 losses when they lead at halftime (82.7% winning percentage).
A STAR IS BORN: Fryzel's First Game Performance Mirrors McGriff's First Game Performance:
Offensive specialist Jimmy Fryzel turned in a brilliant first game in the Arena Football League last week with a nine-reception, 133 yard, three touchdown performance against the Chicago Rush. As the chart below indicates, it is interesting note how closely Fryzel's performance mirrored the first-game performance of Travis McGriff, the player he replaced in the line-up.

MOYE MOORE's RETURN FROM INJURY HELPS PREDATORS RUN ROCK
The return of Orlando Predators FB/LB Marlon Moye-Moore from a devastating knee injury last year against Dallas, has helped the Predators running game. With 31-yards last week against Chicago, Moore helped the Predators to their highest rushing total of the 2005 season, with a 16-carry for 76 yard total. Not only did it move the Predators from 7th place to 3rd place in the Arena Football League in rushing for the season, it has helped the Predators re-gain its reputation as one of the league's best teams in running the rock. Since the team's inception in 1991, Orlando has finished in the top four in rushing 11 times in 14 years. Here is where Orlando stood in league rushing over the years:

PREDATORS PRODUCE COACHES
Maybe it would be going too far to call the Orlando Predators "The AFL Cradle of Coaches," but at least 16 current and former Predators players have gone on to the coaching ranks, including: Doug Miller (High School), Chris Barber (High School), Ben Bennett (af2), Webbie Burnett (af2), Victor Floyd (High School), Rick Hamilton (AFL), Jay Gruden (AFL, NFL), Kevin Guy (AFL, af2), Bret Munsey (af2, AFL), Jerry Odom (High School, Colleges), Pat O'Hara (High School), Connell Maynor (College), Jeff Parker (College), Fred Ray (High School), Barry Wagner (College), and Herkie Walls (High School). Miller, Wagner, and Ray remain active in the Arena Football League as players â coaching football in the off-season.
ORLANDO REMAINS TOP DEFENSIVE TEAM IN AFL
Giving up just 39.8 points per game, the Orlando Predators remain the top team in the Arena Football League in scoring defense. The Predators are the only team allowing less than 40 points per game and have given up 50 or more points just 11 times in the last 47 regular season games.
HAMILTON CLIMBING UP RUSHING TOUCHDOWN LIST: With four rushing touchdowns in 2005, quarterback Joey Hamilton continues to climb up the Predators all-time list in career rushing touchdowns. Hamilton now has 12 career rushing scores, tying Paul McGowan's eighth place career total. The record for career rushing touchdowns by a Predators quarterback in 18, accomplished by Connell Maynor in six seasons with the Predators (1998-2000, 2002-2004). While Hamilton could theoretically move into third place on Orlando's all-time list this season, he is a long way away from the Predators career record for rushing touchdowns, held by former six-time "Ironman of the Year" Barry Wagner, who rushed for 69 touchdowns from 1992-99.

ATTENDANCE UP 3%
Although the Predators played their home opener on a Sunday afternoon (a day the Predators traditionally do not draw well), Orlando's total attendance is up 3% compared to the same time period last year. Orlando drew 26,111 fans to their first two games last year, which included a Friday night home opener against Austin and a Saturday night game against Indiana. This year, the Predators drew 26,848 to their first two games, which included 12,370 for a 12 Noon game against Colorado and a sellout crowd of 14,478 against Tampa Bay last week. Under the current configuration, Hummer Field at the TD Waterhouse holds 13,692 for Arena Football. The chart below compares Predators attendance through two home games:
Year G Attendance Avg. % Capacity
2005 2 26,848 13,424 98.04%
2004 2 26,111 13,056 95.03%
FIELD GOAL DROUGHT ENDS: With Brian Gowins hitting a pair of field goals last week against Chicago, the Predators ended a drought without making a field goal at 25 consecutive quarters. Orlando was 0 for 2005 in field goals, having missed all seven attempts this season prior to Gowins converting on a 21-yard field goal in the second quarter.
SOUTHERN DIVISION TOUGH
Although it is early in the season, the Southern Division can claim the early lead as the Arena Football League's power division. With Orlando, New Orleans and Georgia off to 4-1 starts, the Southern Division boasts a league-best 10-4 against non-division opponents (.714).
GOWINS STREAKING ON EXTRA POINTS
Since taking over for Steve McLaughlin in Week 3, Orlando Predators kicker Brian Gowins has restored a sense of order to Orlando's special teams play. Gowins hit six of eight extra points against Tampa in Week 3, with his only misses coming after penalties set the Predators back 10 and five yards before the point after attempt. Counting that game, however, Gowins has now hit on 14 consecutive extra points and two of six field goals. It should be noted that three of Gowins four misses in the field goal department have come from 51, 51, and 42 yards. In addition, Gowins had a great game against Chicago last week, perfectly executing an on-sides kick and recovering a fumble on a second kickoff in the third quarter. Gowins is 16 of 18 on extra points (.887); while McLaughlin struggled, hitting just 6 of 13 (.462) in his two games.
NEW FACES SPARK PREDATORS TO WIN
The Predators started three new players in their line-up last week and all three played a key role in Orlando's 48-35 road win. Jimmy Fryzel took over Travis McGriff and earned offensive player of the game honors with nine receptions for 133 yards and three touchdowns...Marlon Moye-Moore replaced Rupert Grant in the Predators line-up at FB/LB and rushed for 31 yards and a touchdown, helping the Predators to their best rushing total (76 yards) in almost two years (9-77 vs. Los Angeles, 3-30-2003)...while Jerrian James provided a spark on defense and special teams play.
PREDATORS OFFERING FANS ULTIMATE TAILGATE EXPERIENCE
Ever wonder what it's like on the road with your favorite team? Ever want to be part of the "Official Traveling Party" for the big game? Now Orlando Predators fans will have that opportunity thanks to the "Ultimate Tailgate Party" program announced today by team president Brett Bouchy.
The "Ultimate Tailgate Party" will allow fans to travel with the team on road games to New Orleans and Philadelphia during the 2005 season. For $399 for New Orleans and $425 for Philadelphia (based on double occupancy), fans will travel with the team on chartered jet service from Sanford International Airport, stay at the team hotel, attend a pre-game meal or dinner with Predators Head Coach Jay Gruden, attend the game and fly home with the team. The price includes airfare, hotel, one meal, all ground transportation at the destination city, game ticket, beverages and snacks on the plane.
"The Arena Football League bills itself at the most fan-friendly league in the world and this is simply an extension of that concept," Bouchy said. "To my knowledge this is the first time that a professional football team has made this benefit available to its fans. This will be a great opportunity for the average fan to see what's it like to go on the road with the Predators."
Bouchy went on to emphasize that the program is open to all Predators fans. "College football teams may invite big-time boosters and pro teams may take sponsors on trips, but we want to emphasize that Orlando's "Ultimate Tailgate Party" is open to all our fans." The team will utilize a 140-seat Pan American jet for the program. Approximately 40 seats are reserved for the team personnel, leaving 100 seats available to the public. The New Orleans trip departs at 12 Noon on Saturday, Mar. 12 and will return after the game on Sunday, Mar. 13; while the Philadelphia trip will leave at 12 noon on Saturday, April 30 and return after the game on Sunday, May 1.
For more information or to reserve seats on the charter, call Sylvia Bova at the Predators office, 407-447-3320.
HUMMER OF ORLANDO BECOMES
PREDATORS' FIRST TITLE SPONSOR
The Orlando Predators announced that Hummer of Orlando is the team's first title sponsor in the franchise's 15-year history. The three-year comprehensive partnership, which runs through the 2007 season, gives Hummer of Orlando name recognition in practically every aspect of the Orlando Predators operations. As the presenting sponsor, Hummer of Orlando will receive exposure on approximately 80 billboards throughout the 2005 season. Hummer will also be prominently featured on 100,000 schedule cards, all Predators newspaper advertising, website and all printed materials. Subject to final approval from the Arena Football League, Hummer of Orlando receives naming rights to the Predators playing field. The team will now list its home field as Hummer Field at the TD Waterhouse Centre. Advertising elements of the agreement include sideline dasherboard, turf logo, television and radio spots on Predators broadcasts, program advertising, player and cheerleading appearances, on-field and outside the arena promotions, and VIP and promotional season tickets. "Without question, this is the largest and most important corporate partnership in club history," Orlando Predators President and Managing General Partner Brett Bouchy said. "Hummer of Orlando was one of our larger sponsors last year and they have taken their commitment to Arena Football and the Orlando Predators to a whole new level. Our goal is to justify the faith they put in our product by showing the same faith and commitment to promote their products." "This promises to be a banner year for both the Orlando Predators and Hummer of Orlando, and we're excited to move forward as a team," Hummer of Orlando General Manager Gavin Hutchinson said. "It makes sense for the toughest vehicle on the road to partner with the toughest team in Arena Football. Hummer of Orlando is proud to be a part of the Predators' winning tradition." Hummer of Orlando is scheduled to open a new dealership on 434 in Altamonte Springs in late April.
PREDATORS PLAYERS TO WATCH
OS JIMMY FRYZEL
Fryzel posted solid numbers in his first-ever Arena Football League game, grabbing nine passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns. More impressive than the numbers was Fryzel's ability to gain additional yards after the reception, breaking several tackles despite not being one of the bigger receivers in the league (5-11, 190). "For a first game, he was nothing short of outstanding and certainly exceeded our expectations," Orlando Predators head coach Jay Gruden said.
FB/LB MARLON MOYE-MOORE
Moore displayed no ill effects as he returned from a devastating knee injury (torn tendons, ligaments and dislocated knee) less than 10 months ago. Moore ran with authority, leading the Predators with 34 yards on seven carries, including a nine-yard touchdown run where he carried three men into the end zone.
QB JOE HAMILTON
Although he has led the Predators to a 4-1 start, Hamilton has made some uncharacteristic mistakes this season, losing three fumbles and throwing six interceptions after having just five all last season. Still, Orlando Predators head coach Jay Gruden remains optimistic on his 2nd year quarterback. "We're 4-1 and Joe hasn't even come close to playing his best football," Gruden said. "Our offense is getting closer and closer to where it should be."
DS DAMON MASON
Playing next to three-time AFL Defensive Player of the Year Kenny McEntyre, Damon Mason is quietly putting together perhaps his finest season. In five games, Mason has already collected three "ADT Defensive Player of the Game" awards and one "ADT Defensive Player of the Week" award. His interception in the 4th quarter all but sealed Orlando's 4th win of the 2005 season.
