Orlando Rays News Release
ORLANDO -Orlando pounded out 19 hits and limited Tennessee to just seven on the night as the Rays downed the Smokies 11-2 in front of 1,621 at Cracker Jack Stadium Wednesday.
For the second straight night the O-Rays used a big second inning to put the Smokies in an early hole. Orlando scored six times in the second on six hits, including pushing three runs across on a bases-clearing triple by Amado German. Jesus Feliciano had two hits in the inning, and finished the night 3-5, scoring twice and driving in two to lead the Rays' offense. Orlando's 19 hits were one shy of the team's season high, and the offensive explosion featured at least one hit by every player in the Orlando lineup and a run scored or RBI by every starter.
The early lead would be more than enough for Orlando starter Scott Autrey (W, 3-3), who went eight solid innings, holding the Smokies scoreless until the 5th. The young right-hander struck out four and walked only one on the night.
B.J. Barns and B.J. Upton each had three hit nights, while Joey Gathright, Shawn Riggans and Dan DeMent each had two hits. Upton, Tampa's 2002 first round draft pick (no. 2 overall), scored twice and drove in another, while DeMent chipped in with two RBI.
With the win, Orlando improved to 22-27 on the second half and 54-64 overall, while Tennessee slipped to 29-22, 64-57. The Rays and Smokies continue the four-game series tomorrow at 7:05, with Orlando sending LHP Jason Cromer (1-1, 2.08) to the mound against RHP Pat Collins (0-1, 6.10).
