Mobile BayBears News Release

Birmingham, Ala. – The Mobile BayBears were in the wrong place at the wrong time Wednesday night. The Birmingham Barons had lost four games in a row and took it out on the BayBears, winning the contest, 12-3.

"Fortunately we haven't had many games like this," BayBears manager Craig Colbert said. "We just have to put this one behind us and come out string tomorrow."

Mobile's starter Chris Rojas took the loss, as he was only able to retire one batter, before being relives in the first inning. Rojas (5-9) allowed six runs on four hits and two walks. Jon Hamilton, Rojas' final batter, gave the Barons a 6-0 first inning lead with a three-run homerun.

BayBears reliever Mike Bumstead was the first out of the pen and worked four and two-thirds innings. Bumstead gave up three runs on nine Barons hits, while striking out two.

"Bumstead gave us what we needed," Colbert said. "We didn't have to use up our bullpen tonight. So we should be ready for tomorrow."

Mobile reliever Alan Webb entered the game with his team trailing 9-0 in the sixth inning. Webb walked the first two batters he faced before allowing a three-run homerun to Steve Morales. After six innings, he Barons led 12-0 over Mobile.

The BayBears got on the board in the top of the eighth. Rico Washington walked and Jon Knott hit his second double of the game, putting runners at second and third. Bobby Scales followed with a two-run double, making the score 12-2. Washington drove in Freddy Guzman with the BayBears final run in the top of the ninth.

Rusty Tucker, who set the BayBears single-season saves record earlier this season, was placed on the disabled list August 9th. He will now have "Tommy John" surgery on the torn ligament in his left, throwing shoulder after being examined by doctors in San Diego.

The BayBears and Barons will play game three of their series Thursday night at 7:00. Justin Germano (1-2; 3.34) will start on the mound for Mobile against Birmingham's Byeong An (3-2; 3.65).
