Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - Liam O'Regan, who hails from the neighboring town of Middletown, R.I., will make the short commute to Cardines Field for the second consecutive year as he returns to Newport for the 2018 New England Collegiate Baseball League season.

O'Regan is currently a junior at Elon University where he plays outfield for the Phoenix. In his first summer with the Gulls, the six-foot-two, 215-pound slugger hit five home runs, ranking him third among all Newport players in 2017. Through the first two weeks of his 2018 collegiate season, the Middletown High School product has tallied three doubles and one home run. This consistent display of power has O'Regan leading his team with a .714 slugging percentage.

In O'Regan's first collegiate season he set a program record for most home runs by a freshman with nine in 47 games played. Along with these nine home runs, O'Regan hit 10 doubles and two triples, giving him the third highest (.526) slugging percentage among all Elon batters. The right-handed hitter caught fire in the middle of the 2016 season when he homered in five consecutive games. He was voted to the 2016 Colonial Athletic Conference All-Rookie team following his tremendous campaign.

Prior to becoming a Phoenix, O'Regan ranked among the top 500 prep players nationally by Perfect Game. He was a three-time Rhode Island Coaches Association All-Star, a team captain for head coach Chuck Paiva, and Rhode Island's representative in the 9th Annual Power Showcase held at Marlins Park in Miami, Florida.

With a year in Newport already under his belt, the Gulls are excited to have O'Regan's veteran leadership and proven power in the lineup for the 2018 season.
