Opportunity for Game against MLS Team Awaits Nashville SC

May 23, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Nashville SC News Release

NASHVILLE - Nashville SC is still alive in the U.S. Open Cup. After a convincing 2nd round win over amateur club Inter Nashville FC, Nashville SC will face off against another amateur club, Mississippi Brilla FC, in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday at Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

How We Got Here

Nashville SC was given automatic entry to the U.S. Open Cup second round, as all U.S. professional soccer teams receive an automatic bid. Nashville SC faced Inter Nashville FC in the second round last Wednesday, surviving and advancing after a 2-0 victory. Forward Tucker Hume scored his first two official goals in the victory, while forward Robin Shroot had both assists.

Mississippi Brilla advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open Cup after pulling off an upset over Indy Eleven of the USL in round two of competition. Mississippi Brilla scored the lone goal of the match on a set piece late in the match, propelling them to a 1-0 victory for arguably the biggest win in their club's history.

Nashville Narratives

Nashville SC will bring plenty of momentum into Wednesday's match with a pair of 2-0 victories in its last two matches. The first came on Mother's Day when Nashville beat the defending USL Cup champions, Louisville City FC, at First Tennessee Park. Three days later, Nashville SC beat Inter Nashville in its debut in U.S. Open Cup play by the same two-goal margin. With a week off since its last match, Nashville will try to extend that momentum to qualify for the 4th round of the Cup.

Speaking of the 4th round, a win would propel Nashville SC into a competitive matchup with an MLS team in the next round. U.S. Soccer likes to keep regional matchups intact in the 4th round of the Open Cup, but each 3rd round winner is guaranteed a chance to play an MLS side. Options for Nashville SC or Mississippi Brilla in the next round could include Atlanta United, Orlando City SC, Columbus Crew, DC United, FC Dallas or Houston Dynamo. Nashville SC played friendlies against Atlanta and Orlando in the preseason, losing to Atlanta 3-1, but beating OCSC by that same scoreline.

Brilla Fact

Defender Jordan Skelton, a rising senior with Lander University, was named to the Premier Development League's (PDL) Top-50 prospects. He was a United Soccer Coaches Second-Team All-American last year as a junior after tallying eight goals and three assists in 20 appearances.
