USL, Select Announce Arrival of Official Ball for 2019 Season
May 23, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL) News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - The United Soccer League and its official match ball provider, Select, announced today that the league would introduce the Select Super Brillant as its official ball for the 2019 season. The ball - manufactured by the same organization that becomes the official ball supplier to Germany's Bundesliga starting with the 2018-19 season - will also be used for the remainder of the 2018 USL season.
The Select Super Brillant features the same technical construction and materials as the Derbystar Brillant APS produced by Select for the upcoming Bundesliga season, and will provide an even higher level of performance for the USL's clubs throughout the next 18 months. All league balls will be embossed with the USL's logo upon rollout of the new, high-level line of equipment, and for the start of the 2019 season the balls will be customized to appear in the league's official color scheme.
"We appreciate the opportunity to raise the on-field standard of our official match ball at this point of the season, an opportunity that has come about thanks to the closeness of the relationship between the USL and Select," said USL President Jake Edwards. "The Select Super Brillant will offer an even higher level of performance for our players and teams as they compete for the chance to claim the USL Cup."
The Super Brillant features a Zero-Wing bladder made of high-performance latex, a concept that has been developed to ensure that both the ball and the bladder remain as round as possible. The ball also incorporates a built-in balance point at the opposite side of the valve hole, which helps ensure a perfectly balanced ball with a very lively bounce.
Additionally, the 32-panel design of the ball is lined with several layers of textile material, which helps to adjust the softness and stabilize the panels to ensure the ball retains its perfect shape. The ball's outer layer is made of synthetic leather in polyurethane, with the two surfaces of the cover combining to provide a strong material with consistent softness.
